SYNOPSIS
Based on attachment 8, my group and I have carried out a case study titled Is Kevin Bluffing
by Carol Yake This article tells about the hardships of an experienced teacher named Carol
Yake who have taught for 14 years, in managing the behavioural problems that occurred in
her students. In addition, it also incorporates the internal conflict experienced by a student
named Kevin.
This story is about a student named Kevin who is a problematic student which has been
diagnosed as psychotic, he should be placed in a behavioural classroom but due to some
problems he has been placed in Miss Carol who is a kind and thoughtful person towards her
student. In Kevin class there are 23 6th grade students which are at Lockhaven Elementary
School. Kevin has a problem in controlling his emotion which resulted to be aggressive and
like to rebel.
Majority of Kevin classmates is afraid to approach him because they have seen
how aggressive he could get and he also has even hit Miss Carol. There is also
one situation where Kevin topples the desk, throw books and other equipments
in the classroom. Even worse, Kevin also has threatened to break the class
window in order to frightened her but has been foiled by Miss Carol. Due to the
extreme behavior, the headmaster has asked John Patterson, the school assistant
to take Kevin out of his class and taken into Miss Alison King class, which is a for
students with behavior problems. Kevin was given a Time Out for his action
and was locked in a wooden cage until he has learned his lesson. As a teacher,
Carol loves all her students and cares for her student and paid close attention to
Kevin problems. She always advises her class not to discriminate Kevin and
accept him for what he is. Carol does not want Kevin to be left out in his studies
only because he was having some problems in his personal life.
One day during recess, Carol arrange a meeting with Kevin to find out the truth and Kevin
finally confessed and tells Miss Carol that his biological father like to abuse him when he
was a child but now her mother has remarried to another man. But the abuse has left a long
lasting scar in his soul and it was a painful experience for him. By his story Miss Carol now
knows why Kevin is acting out all the time, realising that old memories have influenced him
to be violent and aggressive towards other people and this is shown clearly in
school. Although no longer threatened by his father, the painful event still has an impact on
him until now. Carol is very sorry for her students and sometimes she blames herself for
what happened to Kevin.
