AN ADVENTURE IN THE DESERT

Friday 12th. January. We are traveling across the Sahara, and we come to Bilma.
It is a mud-brick town surrounded by date palms and built around a beautiful
spring. The migrating birds of all descriptions are eating and resting during their
annual trip from Europe to Africa. Maina is the chief of Bilma; he cannot see,
cannot hear, cannot walk because hes around 100 years old. His grandson Agi
Marder Taher is a cultivated man and the government official. He is very happy to
receive the caravan and to invite the travelers to his house. We are eating goat,
mutton, rice and potatoes. We are hungry and this meal seems like a banquet.
Can you take me to England to meet Vischers grandsons?, he asks. Visher is an
explorer who visited Bilma 70 years ago, and the people in the town remember
him well. Yes, I reply. We can arrange that very easily.
Monday 15th., January. Today we are traveling to Kidwa, a town 162 miles from
Bilma. The sun is shining very brightly and the temperature is 38C. The camels
are walking fast, because they had good rest in Bilma, and drank plenty of water.
