MONTHLY ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT

1. Enhancing Recovery of Coconut Palms Affected by Compostela Valley

Yellowing (CVY) by Agronomic Interventions. Melencion, N.J., Bonaobra III,
Z.S., Mercullo, Jr., W.A, and Canja, L. H.

The cause of the lethal yellowing of coconuts in COMVAL and the determination
of appropriate interventions to restore back these coconuts to healthy conditions
are the main objectives of this study. While plant leaf hoppers are identified to
inhabit in these affected palms, other causes of such yellowing or necrosis of the
mature leaves are likewise being explored.

Results from soil and leaf samples taken from three (3) sites in Camanlangan
detected the following:

1. Macro- and micro- nutrient deficiencies were observed.

2. High mercury contents in excess of the thresholds were detected.

Heavy Metals Bioaccumulation

Results from soil analysis revealed the presence of mercury in excess of the
threshold value.
Other heavy metals and metalloids like Lead (Pb) and Arsenic (As)
respectively are below the threshold levels.

Based on initial results from leaf and soil samples taken from these areas
affected by the Compostela Valley Yellowing (CVY), deficiencies in
nutrients, specifically Potassium (K) and Magnesium (Mg) contributed to the
necrosis of the mature leaves of these palms.

2. Monitored research activities inside and outside the Center

Monitored six (06) research studies inside and outside the Center
Maintained income generating research activities in the Center thru
Banana intercropping
- Turned-over Banana fruits: 140.0 kg Cardava
Dispatched 51 coconut leaf and 102 soil samples from the different
experimental blocks of Agronomy, Soils and Farming Systems Division
in the Center to PCA-Laboratory Services Division for laboratory
analysis

3. Submitted communication/reports to management and other offices/units

Fertilizer recommendation based on the laboratory test results of the
two soil samples from Baliwag Water District, Baliwag, Bulacan
ASFSD Project Proposals submitted to PCA Management for funding
in 2018

OV Oliveros and SQ Lamban attended the 2017 Annual Procurement
Plan Finalization at PCA Central Office on February 15-17, 2017
ASFSD Technical personnel attended the 1st PCA-DRC Quarterly
Meeting at DRC Conference Room on February 24, 2017
5. Provided services to walk-in visitors of the Center
Eastern Kutawato College Incorporated Students from Buluan,
Maguindanao regarding on Integrated Crop Management for coconut
