    arewhattheychoosetotolerate.Thus,aworldinwhichthereisgenderseparationandprejudiceareexternal
    impositionsthatweinternalize.Chandanrecognizesthisashisidentityisformed.Whilehemightbe"Dan"to
    therestoftheworld,hisownidentityisimpactedthroughthecollisionofsocialconstructionsofgenderandhis
    owninternalsenseoflovetowardshissister:"Likewe'vealwaysbeen.Inseparable.Thewaywestartedinlife.
    Twolivesandonebodyinonecomfortablewomb.Tillwewereforcedoutandseparated.Inthisvision,the
    wombisinternal.Itistherealmofthesubjectivewherethereisasenseofequalityinidentity.However,when
    thereis"separation"andbeing"forcedout,"individualidentitybecomessubmergedbyexternalnotionsofthe
    good.Dattaniissuggestingthathumanidentityispoisedbetweentheworldofthesubjectiveandbeing"forced
    out"and"separated"fromoneanother.ThisthemeisexploredinthecharacterizationsofDanandBharti,son
    andmother,wholivewiththeconsequencesofchoosingonevisionovertheotherinthedevelopmentoftheir
    identities.Chandanmustlivewiththelovehehasforhissister,andthesocialadvancementthatplaceshis
    interestabovehers.Thisconditionofbeingimprintsitselfonhisidentity,helpingtodevelopDattani'stheme
    thatindividualidentityistheresultofacollisionbetweensubjectivebeliefandexternalreality.Thechoicesthat
    theindividualmakesinnavigatingbothplayaprofoundroleintheiridentity,andinwhattheydoandhowthey
    shalllive.
