Directions: Read over the rubric for Essay 1. Then answer the following questions by
using the language of the rubric.
1. What specific part(s) of the rubric do you think you addressed well?
Explain.
I think that I followed the directions for the MLA format. I
make sure that the excerpts from the letter I use, if 4 lines or longer, are
properly indented. My works cited page is at the end, and that my heading
includes my name, your name, date, and class. Content wise, I feel is my
organization. I start off with my introduction where I introduce the ideas I
am talking to. The rest of my body paragraphs contain an example and the
paragraphs are organized through the order in which they show up in the
letter. After my four body paragraphs, I end my essay with my conclusion. I
also feel I explain my ideas in the topic sentence of the body paragraphs. I
make sure that there is an excerpt from the letter to backup my claim and
analysis.
2. What specific part(s) of the rubric do you feel the least confident in?
Explain.
Something I couldve worked more on was adding more
background information on Martin Luther King jr, and the clergymen.
Adding more about their worldview is something I needed to do.
3. What grade would you give yourself in EFFORT for this essay?
Explain.
I feel I put a lot of effort into this essay. I spent a lot of time
looking for quotes that I feel would really back up my claim. I also tried to
bring about the best analysis I could of the quote and how it relates to the
rhetorical device. Even though I feel I could have improved a bit more on
my introduction, I feel the rest of my essay was solid. All in all, I think I
would give myself an A because I feel very proud of the work I put into this
essay, the organization and content it has.
4. What grade would you give yourself on the essay itself? Explain.
On the essay itself, I would give myself an A- because I
covered most of the things I needed mentioned in the rubric, except for
adding more about the background and looking at the sentence structures.
5. Write about an idea that most impacted, changed, or challenged
your thinking from MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Specifically, consider
the following topics as possible ideas you can comment on:
From reading through MLKs letter, it challenged me
with the idea of Segregation still being around today and the forms
of it. I never really thought as segregation still being present but
after reading the letter and some of the examples he uses, I realize
that there are still many forms of racism today.
How will you use your understanding of rhetorical
appeals to help you develop your own essay and argument
writing? Explain.
1. I will use it to help me understand
how the author of what I am reading is able to be held
credible. By looking at their background info or worldview, I
will be able to identify their credibility. Understanding
rhetorical appeals will also help me develop a better analysis
by having a more firm, concrete analysis.
