Course Objectives
To build on a background in..
Static and dynamic analysis of structures (e.g.,
cee137, cee235a), and linear elasticity
Introductory finite element methods (e.g., cee135c)
a basic review will be provided
To learn how to perform linear analyses of various
boundary and initial value problems in engineering
using the Finite Element Method
Theory & computer implementation
Manual calculation of small problems

Mathematics: Vectors, tensors, vector calculus, grad, div, Greens theorem, summation convention,

Boundary Value Problems in Elasticity [Hjelmstad, Ch 5]
2. Introduction to FEM
One-dimensional elastostatics [Hjelmstad, Ch 6]
Principle of Virtual Work

Ritz method, Galerkin Method, Finite Element Approximations [also, Hughes Chapter 1]

Computer implementation [ET]

3. Two- and three-dimensional problems


Heat conduction (2D), and Linear elastostatics (2D, 3D) [Hughes Ch 2]
Implementation issues: isoparametric elements, numerical integration, derivation of shape functions
