BUILDING YOUR FIRST, VERY OWN
MODEL!
THE HOBBY OF A LIFETIME

To who that might be interested in building your model

and might not have any experience at all, this article will

be just for you. As today I am Thaothong Kesornmala

editor of this magazine will guide you through on your

first models with some tips and tricks that might help you

out later on in your next models. As you might know

plastic modeling will take time so you must really be calm

every time you do models. Modeling is a type of art, you cannot do models if you are

frustrated with it. The result of the model will be bad if you are to be frustrated while

working with it.

CHOOSE YOUR MODEL

On the very first step of

modeling applies to weather you

are a pro modeler or a beginner.

This step is to find what you

want to build, there are many

types of models such as; aircraft,

cars, AFVs (armored fighting

vehicle), figures, ships, and

many more. You might want to plan and do some research on what models you wanted to

1ST ISSUE PAGE 2

build. The models might be produced by many company so I would recommend you reading

reviews on the internet about what company is the best or what company suits you the most.

You might find that this hobby is not very famous in Thailand so the variety of models might

be very little, for this I would recommend you to buy the model from foreign country which

might have caused more money, but at least you get what you really want. Some very good

online model retailers out there would be; Hannants, Hobby Easy, Lucky model, Hobby

Search, Hobby Link Japan, or via eBay.

RESEARCH & CONSTRUCTION

After you have purchased your model, you might want to look for some information

about your model. For this process you can have a look at some walk-around photographs,

and choose what camouflage you want to applies on to your model. If you have decided what

scheme you want to have on your model,

you might want to purchase paints and

detail up parts of your choice. If you have

never build any models at all, I would not

recommend you to not buy a detail-up

parts. This is because detail up parts

requires you to modify the parts of the model so

building it out-of-box is way easier to complete your

model. After you decided what the model will be

looking like you might want to take the parts out

1ST ISSUE PAGE 3

carefully with a plastic cutter. For this part you will be snap-fitting your model meaning you

will try to fit all of your parts together by some tape. This process shows how the model will

be looking like and shows whether or not the part fits together well. If there is a gap you will

need to fill it with a plastic putty during your build. After you finished this process remember

to put all the parts into bags orderly. Move on to the building follow your instruction and

build your model. Some sanding and filling may be required throughout the process.

PAINTING AND FINISHING TOUCHES

` The next process might be the

most troublesome ever in doing

models. This process is to wrap up all

your models with paint. Painting can be

a pain but also can be fun. As for

newcomers painting with brushes or

spray can is the most recommended

since it is the easiest way to paint your

models but if you are into this hobby I would recommend you buying an airbrush which helps

enhancing your work with finer details. Paints used on models must be specifically made for

plastic since it may damage or not stick on your model if it is not the right kind of paint to use

on models. The

paints itself does

not contain any

solvent so you

must purchase a

bottle of thinner

to thin down the

1ST ISSUE PAGE 4

paint. Thinners are also has to be very specific type to your model since too strong thinner

such as the triple A thinner will be corrosive and it corrodes plastic too. When handling with

paint you might want to wear a mask to protect you from dangerous chemical in the paint (be

careful with your paint it is very dangerous and also very flammable). The color of your paint

can be found in your instruction which says precisely what type of paint you wanted to buy

for your chosen camouflage or scheme. After you paint the model you must let it dry for 2-3

hours so be patient. After the paint dry the model usually provide you a set of decal which

will be applied onto your model the decal must be put into some warm water in order to use

them, and you will carefully apply them on the spot shown in your color guide. After you

finished putting on decals you might want to spray a coat of clear on your model to protect

the decals from falling off.

So thats all to it hope you have some more knowledge on this hobby. This hobby can

sometimes be very annoying but I hope you could be patient to it. The key to success in this

hobby that I personally use is patience. So that concludes the article, and please, if you have

any questions or spotted something not right about this or any article in the magazine be sure

to contact us or leaving us a comment.

THAI MSOT MODELERS MEETING
THE MOST ENJOYABLE M OMENTS OF THE YEAR!

Waking up having it all

planned from the start, I

headed out of my bed room

with my utmost enthusiasm for

the long awaited day. Jumped

into the car, ignoring breakfast

and all unnecessary (I did take

shower), heading straight for

Thai MSOTs modelers meeting.

As I find myself at the Royal

Thai Air Force museum, as most of the time, the meeting is in the 4th building. As the door

opened the breeze of excitement blows me away. I walked in seeing so many people, more

than any other years I have visited this event, one of the elder member also came to greet

me and so do I.

I walked around after I am there with the scent of friendliness I feel and some of the

time I spent in the morning was mostly looking around and buying things. As many more

people comes inside the building, I was having my models on display. What I really hope from

this event was some critique on my works, since it can be very important to learn from your

1ST ISSUE PAGE 6

mistake and

move forward

with a better

results. After I

displayed my

models, I found

that this years

theme is not

aircraft anymore,

but thats not the

deal. The deal is

that I noticed that there are much less people who are doing models of ships and tanks. This

years most displayed type of model seemed to be figures and figurines. Though I knew that

figures modeling are the main theme for this years modelers meeting I still made models

that are not figures since Im horribly sucked at making figures.

One of the thing I got myself into is an event that was created by pros among pros in

modeling figures. The event is to teach amateurs how to paint the figure, this event is free of

charge, but you need to prepare your own figure model that you already made. The

instructors are surprisingly very good at teaching and guiding us how to get the job done,

well not as good as our best teacher in MUIDS (Mr. Forgy give me an A pls), I still does thing

as horrible as ever even though they teach me step by step. In conclusion to this event is:

figure painting was a pain for me. Maybe thats not one of my best talent after all, so sad.

1ST ISSUE PAGE 7

However if you are interested in these kind of thing and you are new to this hobby next

years annual meeting will also has this same particular type of event. Though next years

event might not be

entirely figures but it is

an over all, any kind of

modelling, with

professional modelers

teaching you and giving

a lecture (sounds like a

fun thing listening to a

lecture). Next years

Figure 1 a figure painting tutorial booth, make sure sou check it out!

annual meeting date

will be announce about 2 or 3 months before the meeting, as told from some of the staff, our

magazine will also announce this meeting on one of the volume so stay tuned.

Time sure has pass fast especially

when it is on some of the best and long

awaited days. By the time I finished tutoring

on my figures painting skills it was already

14.00 and I still havent had any food in my

stomach. So I horridly ran to get some instant

noodles and a cup of iced mocha. Now I get

the chance to walk around in the show having

some chat with modelers and getting some critique on my work. One of the model caught my

1ST ISSUE PAGE 8

eyes, which is a ship model, made by mister Tawatchai said to be one of the best ship

modelers. I go right straight finding the modeler who made this ship to get some technique

and ask him some questions to clear my doubtful mind of how he made the model so

beautiful. As I spotted him I talked to him for a

while, one of the best quotes I heard so far is

from him. As I ask him why does the ship model

looks so alive when there is no diorama, the

answer he gave me is; ships has some

particular power makes it alive by its own

without any need of other help. . It is indeed

true from what he says, confirmed by me, that is.

It is already 16.45 and the party (I mean the event) is over and it is the time to say
Figure 2 Mr Tawatchai and his friends on the group interview
goodbye to this wonderful moment of the year.

My mind is full of thinking what will be next in the up coming event. Now the day has ended

and I must get going, so this is what the meeting is, we welcome all newcomers to this

modeling society and hope you will be joining in this event next year.

HASEGAWA 1/32 KI-84
THE BEST REPLICA OF THE HAYATE IN 1/32

In the summer of 1944, reported from the south, our radar has spotted a pack of aircraft seemed

expected to be a bomber. 29th sentai was assigned to eliminate all the bombers and its escort, with the new

technology, the ki-84 29th sentai now has enough fire power to overwhelm any of the American fighters. With

great results, 70-75percent of the raid group was shot down. This plane was put into the service as a home

defense machine.

Some of the sorties

and progress made

in the Ki-84 in the

29th sentai are

incredibly good in

which made them

an ace squadron.

The ki-84 appears into service in the late 1943 which has been one of the best fighter ever built by the Imperial

1ST ISSUE PAGE 10

Japanese Army. This particular type of aircraft can fly better than those of the allied aircraft. Though it cannot

exceed the F4U corsairs but it can turn way faster than what the F4Us can do. This type of aircraft came very

late in the war and it cannot really makes that much of an

effective role. Ki-84s are very expensive to build and so this

cost Japan a lot of money so this type of aircraft production

has delayed a lot. Less than 3500 of the Ki-84s were built by

the end of the war. Though this amount might looks a lot

for todays army size but the average mass produced

fighter should be around 8000-10000 built more or less.

This plane by its size is really huge it is even a comparable

match for the p-47s, but still remains its maneuverability.

INTO THE KIT:

I really like the aircraft built by those of axis nations, it is a true beauty to me. The Ki-84 now has been

adopted by Hasegawa to make it a models for us to build. Hasegawa really captures the Ki-84, reduce its size

and put it in a box. The detail is very nice Hasegawa plastic is, as always, high qualities and will be very easy to

work with. I picked this up from a shop in the town, they sells a lot of stuffs and models which you cannot find

in your ordinary model shop. This costs me 1550 bath retail price.

Hasegawa had been making all these nice kits over the years. This Ki-84 is also a masterpiece from

them. On the cover you get a usual, as always, nice art box of a Ki-84 and an illustration of what the finished

model would be like on the side of the box. As you open the box, you might notice that the number of parts

are incredibly little. However little parts does

not means this kit is bad or has little detail. The

kit is definitely packed with quality just that it

may need some aftermarket parts. Aftermarket

parts that I would recommend you to get is the

seat which Eduard has released a photo-etched

1ST ISSUE PAGE 11

set for this, might cost you some money but definitely worth it.

This is the 2nd model of the Ki-84 in 1/32, the first one is from Nichimo (otaki) a long time ago. Model

from Nichimo is a raised panel lines but with higher details. Though the Nichimo has a higher detail but with a

lot of problem such as a huge gap in the wing fit, however; Hasegawa managed to fix this issue and has an

engraved panel lines which is easier to work with. Hasegawa also has a correct fuselage shape which you do

not need to do anything to fix it. Hasegawa also has a lot of room for improvements but as the way it is now it

will be a great model and an eye catcher out of the box. Hasegawas Ki-84 also requires less modelling skills to

work with so this model will also work with beginners and experienced modelers too.

The decal looks very nice comes in 3 separated camouflage which are the; ki-84 of the 47th sentai

1945, 51st sentai 1944, and 101st sentai 1945. The decal has no problem but as some of you might know, there

was an issue with Hasegawa decals, they are very vulnerable to humid weather and so they tend to have less

lifespan than those of Cartograf printed decals. Though it is very vulnerable to humidity, you do not need to

1ST ISSUE PAGE 12

worry about this issue if you are living somewhere that is not close to the

equator. Also the quality is very good and comparable to those

aftermarket decals, however; if you are not satisfied with the decals you

have in the box, Aeromaster decals, and montex marking already provided

you more option to paint. Though montex mask is something different, it

is a pre-cut masking tape which is also a great option for you to try it out.

At last, I really recommend this model to anyone with any rate of

experience. Though the price might be very high for western countries to

afford it, but the price for Asians and Japanese may be very affordable and quite cheap. Though the rivets

might not be as good as Nichimos molding but it still worth to buy it.

WHY MODELLING? WHY NOT SOME

OTHER HOBBY?
This is the F.A.Q. when someone asks

me about this hobby. Most of the time I usually

reply with a question, but in this article I would

explain it clearly by my point of view and from

what I thought of this hobby. As most of us has

some different way of approaching the hobby

and a different point of view on; why do we enjoy modeling?

. The start of this hobby is when I was very young. Since I was a child, I loved

airplanes, trains, ships, and other fighting vehicle. This made my mind set of wanting to ride

on one of those planes or trains. In the old days modeling is quite a popular hobby in

Thailand and Central department store usually stocks models and so when I visited Central I

usually go staring at some of the box and memorize the box art to be able to draw the picture

1ST ISSUE PAGE 13

of the model so that it at least gives me an idea of what it looks like so that I can fantasize it

when it was fighting and such.. I felt

such shame retelling the story to you

guys right now. On my birthday 11th

March, I am 7 and so I get my first

model kit ever, I can remember it very well, it was a 1/700 Tamiya z-27 destroyer. I still has

that model with me until now. The whole model was a disaster, however at the time, I really

think that the model is so beautiful. So one little advise to all of you reader, please please be

patient with your first model. Be happy to make it a complete model not a partially done

ones.

Now you know that I really like war machines since I was a child, but why do I enjoy

modeling? That is one tough question indeed, I cant really express why I am so obsessed

with the hobby at first but as I go deep into modeling the more I knew about myself and the

further I am to the answer. From what I think, this hobby is what I think of as to get

something similar to the thing you want but you cannot get one. That is just my answer to this

but also one of the thing I have had in mind but not as clearly expressed to this one is to just

be able to recreate something and you actually have to made it yourself makes you become

proud of the work you have done. So now those reasons may look very simple and may be

achieve with some hobby that requires less work and more money.

To me I would say it is yourself that you should change to be capable of building

models, no such thing as blaming on the model itself will work. I am too have a hot head and

wanted to rush things up every time, but just for modeling it is the time I could cool my mind

and starts to focus better and better. Modeling is indeed not a hobby for everyone, such things

as collecting stamps, collecting coins can be found rather easier than modeling ( well in

1ST ISSUE PAGE 14

Thailand ) which is already quite a rare hobby which many people tends to get bored after

doing one or two models. However some might be finding themselves in the right place and

has this one of their favorite hobby. To me I am glad that I found myself into the right spot

since I was a child, since it would really help me with my hobby finding in the near future.

However I sometimes get bored of modelling and started playing games but once I am bored

of games I can realize that modeling is my real hobby.

Now that this hobby is not at the peak of its prosperity where everyone enjoys

building model. I still love this hobby as much as I love to eat. Though this hobby may not be

the right one for many of you but if you have not tried building one I would really

recommend you to have a go on this hobby and maybe it might become your lifetime hobby.
