Radio Drama

Synopsis:
My radio drama tells the story of a young man who is falsely accused of
murdering a child and is charged with the death penalty. He soon meets a man
named Morgan who he becomes close with. When new evidence is found, it is
possible for Thomas Brodie to be released of the charges.
Format:
- Single Play
- Drama / Thriller

My drama fits into this format of being a single play as the story concludes
within one episode. There is no cliff-hanger and the end of my drama that
anyone could interpret into being a second episode. However, if the
audience becomes interested enough there could be a possibility to create
two more episodes one based before the trial and one based after Thomas
Brodie is released.

Narrative Structure:
The radio is based in the 1950s and begins inside a courtroom and a judge
reading out the sentence of a man called Thomas Brodie who is being charged
with the murder of a young boy named Marshall Evington. Thomas Brodie is
charged with the death sentence and is sent to be executed. The story goes on
to explain that Thomas Brodie has been falsely accused and is an innocent man.
During his time in prison he meets another man named Morgan who believes
that Thomas is innocent but understands that Brodie may be charged with the
murder despite this, he then decides to support Brodie during his time in prison.
When new evidence comes about that Marcus Dwight, a dangerous man from
their town could be involved in the murder that judge calls for another trial.
While being escorted to the Courtroom, Thomas finds that Morgans time to be
executed is soon and they have a meaningful goodbye. After entering the
courtroom the judge asks Thomas to sit, the scene ends to a short monologue of
Thomas expressing his feelings, and explaining to the audience what happened
in the courtroom.
My radio drama is appropriate for my chosen genre as its very dramatic and
follows the drama stereotype where its all fairly exaggerated in order to keep
the audience interested. However, Ive also stated that my drama also could be a
thriller as the storyline is based upon the brutal murder of a young boy and when
describing the gruesome death this could be stimulating for the audience as they
may react to it in a certain way.
My story is being told in a flashback form. Its being interpreted to the audience
as an article that Brodie features in his newspaper. The story begins in the
courtroom where Brodie is charged with murder and is sentenced to be hanged.
The story then goes onto Brodies time on death row where he bonds with other
criminals and he reflects on their story in his piece. The drama will then describe
how new evidence is found that confirms he was not the murderer as a witness
comes forward and describes the real convict. However, the flashback is told in
linear as it goes from beginning to end and is a closed drama as my story
reaches a conclusion.
My drama will be aired on Radio 4 at 8:00pm on a Wednesday evening. This is
because this time slot is when my target audience is available to listen to my
story as they are not at work or out of the house as it takes place on a
weeknight.

Characters:

Thomas Brodie is a 22 year-old man born and raised in a small

town near London and he works at his local newspaper as a journalist.
He has lived an ordinary life and has never stood out from the crowd.
Sadly, he witnesses a murder of a 6-year-old boy, which he is later
framed for.

Marcus Dwight is a 27 year-old man. His girlfriend left

him after 7 years and in order to get revenge he kills the
child she had with another man during their relationship.
When the relationship ends, she claims he became an
aggressive man. Dwight was always misbehaving during
his years at school and had a reputation within the town.
After his years at school came to end he became a
mechanic at a local garage.

Marshall Evington is a 6 year-old boy who was brutally

murdered by his mums ex-boyfriend, Marcus Dwight who
stabbed him to death. He was killed suddenly on his walk
home. When Thomas Brodie found his body in plain sight
the authorities were contacted immediately .

Russel Green is the detective looking into the case of Marshall Evington. He is
also a guard at the prison where Thomas Brodie is being held. He was born in the
United Kingdom but moved to the states at the age of 41. Returning back to the
UK after spending 10 years in America he took charge of this case. He lost his
wife in a house fire during his time in the states and
has two children.

Target Audience:
- Who is my Target Audience?
My drama is aimed at both female and male
listeners. The drama follows the thriller genre and I think it would appeal to a
variety of ages however; I am aiming towards young adults/adults as I think they
would be able to follow the story better than the audience younger than them.
As well as the majority of the characters involved are around their age range
making it more appealing for them.
- What can my audience expect?
My audience can expect a radio drama that is thrilling and full of mystery. In a
way they can expect to follow the characters through this journey as well as
interact on finding out who the real killer is. This will keep them interested in my
production.
Budget:
- My actors will earn 247 per 7 hours (35 an hour) x3
-
- Using the recording studio costs about 146 for 6 hours
-
- Overall my radio drama would cost 887
Actors:

Joe Maine Thomas Brodie
