Netball Score Keeping

Centre passes alternate between the teams regardless of who


scores.

In each quarter, one team will always have a centre pass on an


EVEN score and the other team will always have a centre pass on
an ODD score.

EXAMPLE: Red Team v Blue Team


At the start of the match, the RED team wins the toss and takes
the first centre pass. Therefore this team will always have a centre
pass on an EVEN score in the first quarter. Write E in the first box
below their name on the score card. Blue team will be odd in the
first quarter so write O.

0-0 (even) - first centre pass RED


1-0 (odd) - second centre pass BLUE
2-0 (even) - third centre pass RED etc. etc. Sample Score Card

At the end of the first quarter, the score is RED 10-8 BLUE.

Second Quarter
For the second quarter, there are two possibilities for the centre passes.
(i) RED stays on evens and BLUE stays on odds or
(ii) They change over

(i) Stay the same, if:


A goal was scored prior to the end of the quarter and the next centre pass had not been taken
before the whistle for the end of the quarter. If this happened here, the RED would have the first
centre pass in the next quarter as the score is 10-8 (18 = even) and RED are even.

(ii) Change over, if:


A centre pass has been taken and the ball is in play when the whistle is blown to end the quarter.
(This is probably more likely to happen, especially in school netball.) In this example, the score was
10-8 (even), the REDs took their centre pass but the whistle was blown before any goal was scored.
In the next quarter, it is the BLUEs turn to take the next centre pass. The score is still even so now
the BLUEs are E and the REDs are O.

And so on for the rest of the match Schools often play 2 x halves instead of 4 x quarters.
Netball Score Keeping

You can also use a hair tie/elastic band on the hand facing the attacking teams goal. After each
goal is scored change it to the other hand and indicate with that hand the direction of the next
centre pass.
