Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F Date: 09/03/17 Time: 09:50 Year: 7

Learning Area: Science Topic: Experiment- Effect of Temperature on Solubility

Curriculum content description: (from SCSA)

Collaboratively and individually plan and conduct a range of investigation types, including
fieldwork and experiments, ensuring safety and ethical guidelines are
followed (ACSIS125)
Measure and control variables, select equipment appropriate to the task and
collect data with accuracy (ACSIS126)
Construct and use a range of representations, including graphs, keys and models to
represent and analyse patterns or relationships in data using digital technologies as
appropriate (ACSIS129)
Summarise data, from students own investigations and secondary sources, and use
scientific understanding to identify relationships and draw conclusions based
on evidence (ACSIS130)

Students prior knowledge and experience:

Definitions of solution, solvent and solute; and soluble
Definition of dilute, concentrated and saturated solution; recognising a saturated solution
Definition of variable; identifying dependent, independent and controlled variables
Definition of a fair test.
Types of data; corresponding types of graphs; column graph

Learning purpose:
Carrying out a self-planned experiment, identify aim of the experiment, identify
controlled, independent and dependent variables
Measure dependent variable and analyse and represent data in the form of a graph
Make a conclusion based on evidence from experimental data

Learning objectives: Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson, students will
be able to: Questioning during experiment
Come up with a hypothesis and (open/closed and evaluative questions)
conduct an experiment to test it Validation test (understanding
Observe that temperature has an effect questions)
on solubility
Conclude that more solutes dissolve at
a higher temperature
Preparation and Resources:
Groups of 3-4
Individual experiment planning sheets
Materials outlined in experiment, The Salt Situation

Catering for diversity:

Simple language for non-linguistic learners
Systematic steps of experiment
Group work

Timing: Learning Experiences:

Introduction:
Send one student per group to collect equipment
Read through planning sheet together, get students to identify important
details. What are we trying to figure out? What does soluble mean? What is
our hypothesis?
Safety Requirements: Students identify safety requirements for this
experiment (safety glasses, shaking test tube -be explicit!)
What are the controlled variables in this experiment? How do we make sure
this is a fair test?
What is a saturated solution? How do we know when a solution is saturated?

Sequence of learning experiences:

Students decide on roles
Send one student to collect 1x beaker of hot water and 1x beaker for salt
from the front
Students fill test tubes with hot water (50mL) first and measure out salt (1x
spoonful). Repeat till saturated. Count how many spoons.
Fill in pre-drawn table
Is this solution saturated? How can you tell?
Repeat for tap and cold water
Why does the salt settle to the bottom?
Does temperature have an effect on solubility? Was your hypothesis correct?
Can we make such a strong statement after only having this experiment done
once?

Lesson conclusion:
Clean up table and return equipment
What type of data have we collected? (continuous or discrete?)
Is there a better way to represent our data? What kind of graph could we
draw?
Draw column graph (if time)
