Drain the oil unless done earlier. Refit the plug with a new sealing ring.

Note: The oil may be hot.

Turn the gearbox so that the torque converter is uppermost.

Note: Oil and possible coolant that runs out may be very hot.

Screw counterhold 9998570 securely in the torque converter.

Remove the centre plug (Allen key 17 mm).

Fit counterhold 9810808 and loosen the bolt for the turbine shaft. Remove the counterhold and screw (Allen
key 14 x 140 mm).

Unscrew the lifting eye 9810807 and carefully lift up the torque converter.

Note: The oil that runs out can be hot.

The torque converter's weight is approx. 60 kg.

Special tools: 9810807

Take care of the shims.

Note: There may still be shims in the torque converter.

Use a pointed mandrel and knock it down into the seal on the side where the external oil pipe is located.

Note: Do not knock the mandrel down on the oil pump's gearwheel side, the flange can break. Do not drill a hole for the bolt as
swarf can damage the gearbox.

Screw in a self-tapping screw with a large washer and break away the seal using breaking tool 9998511.

Clean the seal's surfaces in the gearbox. Grease the edge of the seal and knock it down using the ZF tool
1X56137382 or with tools 9996084 and 9996759 level with the end cover.

Note: The wide side of the ring towards the seal.

Lubricate the seal lip with Vaseline. Fit adjuster washers if they have been removed from the turbine shaft.

Clean, inspect and grease with Vaseline the seal's wear surface on the torque converter. Carefully lower and
turn the torque converter so that the splines and gears mesh. Remove the lifting eye.
