Twen ounter Book One by Tom Ervin Duet Accompaniments To The Bordogni-Rochut "Melodious Etudes For Trombone” #1-20 PREFACE ‘The Rochut editions of Bordogni's vocalises have become the most widely used etudes in American trombone pedagogy. They are prized for their lyric beauty, and also for their development of endurance, upper range, legato technique, styling and more. Other bass clef instrumentalists also use Rochut. Currently (1992) the most circulated version is published in three volumes by Carl Fischer, Inc. (catalog numbers 01594, 01595, 01596). These Twenty were written to accompany etudes #1 through 20 in Book One of that popular version. Piano accompaniments or other editions were not examined during composition, and my harmonies may not coincide with others. They are printed separately as a "part book” to save space and page turns and to avoid copyright problems. Most players own the other book. ‘These Counterparts may be practiced and played as etudes alone. They are similar in style to the Bordogni; some are harder and some are easier than the Bordogni originals. But the primary intent was for recreational duet playing and for the teaching studio. Duets are fun and more, contributing to sightreading, intonation, ensemble, style-matching, confidence, independence, ete. As with the piano accompaniments, the duet parts also enhance the original melodies. To assist players, the page numbers and page turns are identical to the Carl Fischer publication; the staves and measures have also been laid out identically. Some errata and some questions exist in Carl Fischer's edition. Glenn P. Smith's excellent article ("Errata for Bordogni-Rochut Melodious Etudes, Book I,” International Trombone Association Journal Volume V, January 1977, pp.5-7) is interesting. Back issues of that Journal are available from ITA Archives, School of Music, University of North Carolina, Greensboro NC 27412. However, the errata in etudes 1-20 have little effect. Since these duet parts were written to accompany the Fischer edition as printed, I have not added Professor Smith's suggestions.
