Introduction

Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable, cleaner fuel for

diesel engines derived from Animals fats and Plant oils.

Biodiesel can be used alone, or blended with

petrodiesel in any proportions in existing diesel
engines with little or no modification.
Biodiesel
Produced by transforming animal fat or vegetable oil
with alcohol .
Fuel is made from oilseed or recycled restaurant
grease.
Animal fat feedstocks can be made into high-quality
biodiesel that meets the specifications for biodiesel.
Till now in India, biodiesel is made from Jatropha
plants, But the avenues of biodiesel from animal fat
has not been explored in India.
Why Animal fat
Easy Availability
Raw materials can be availed from slaughter
houses, poultry, animal road kills etc.
High Cetane Number of Animal Fat Biodiesel
Lower Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Animal
Fat Biodiesel
Biodiesel Production
Animal fat are heated up to
105-110C so that it will be
converted into fat oil

In a separate flat bottom flask,

alcohol and NaOH/KOH (2% of
fat)are mixed exothermic
reaction take place.

Alcohol (methanol/ethanol) and

animal fats are mixed in the
molar ratio of 6:1.

The setup was heated at

60-65C for 1hr and ambient
pressure in the presence of
catalyst such as NaOH/KOH.

After this, it is poured into a

bottle so that biodiesel and
glycerol get separated as shown.

Improvements in biodiesel usage
Clogging of engines Low-temperature flow improving additives would be
added.
Oxidative Stability of Animal Fat Biodiesel is Low - The oxidative stability of
biodiesel obtained from fat is low. Artificial antioxidants would enhance
the life of such biodiesel.
High Sulphur content of the biodiesel- Vacuum distillation technique can
be applied for removing this sulphur during the purification process.
Economy
Production Cost
0.51$/per liter as compared to Diesel 0.13$/per liter
Subsidy vs Tax
Multiple source with different quality standards Price Inequality
Price Sustainability
Source is cheaply available now as waste product but with increasing Demands it
will gain importance and price
