TOURISM IMPORTANCE OF HYDERABAD

The city of smiles, of lights, of a thousand faces, endearingly

called the Pearl City, Hyderabad offers a variety of tourist
attractions ranging from Heritage monuments, Lakes and Parks,
Gardens and Resorts, Museums to delectable cuisine and a
delightful shopping experience. To the traveler, Hyderabad offers a
fascinating panorama of the past, with a richly mixed cultural and
historical tradition spanning 400 colorful years. Some of the tourist
attractions include...
CHARMINAR

The Charminar is as much the signature of Hyderabad as the

Taj Mahal is of Agra or the Eiffel Tower is of Paris. Mohammed
Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad, built Charminar in
1591 at the centre of the original city layout. It is said to be built as
a charm to ward off a deadly epidemic raging at that time. Four
graceful minarets soar to a height of 48.7 m above the ground.
Charminar has 45 prayer spaces and a mosque in it. Visitors can
view the architectural splendour inside the Charminar. The
monument is illuminated in the evenings and a pedestrianisation
project around the monument is under implementation
MECCA MASJID

Two hundred yards southwest of the Charminar is the

Mecca Masjid, so named because the bricks were brought from
Mecca to build the central arch. The Qutb Shahis never finished
the building of the mosque, which was completed by Aurangzeb
in 1694.

LAAD BAAZAR
This is famous, colourful shopping centre of the old city,
tucked away in one of the streets leading off from Charminar.
Bridal wear, Pearls and the traditional Hyderabadi glass and
stone studded bangles are sold here.
GOLCONDA FORT

Golconda is one of the famous forts of India. The name

originates from the Telugu words Golla Konda meaning
Shepherds Hill. The origins of the fort can be traced back to the
Yadava dynasty of Deogiri and the Kakatiyas of Warangal.
Golconda was originally a mud fort, which passed to the
Bahmani dynasty and later to the Qutb Shahis, who held it from
1518 to 1687 A.D. The first three Qutb Shahi kings rebuilt
Golconda, over a span of 62 years. The fort is famous for its
acoustics, palaces, ingenious water supply system and the
famous Fateh Rahben gun, one of the cannons used in the last
siege of Golconda by Aurangzeb, to whom the fort ultimately fell.
Sound & Light Show at Golconda Fort:

The glorious past of Golconda Fort is narrated effectively with

matchless Sound and Light effects. The unique Sound & Light
Show takes you right back in time, when Golconda was full of
life, glory and grandeur.

QUTB SHAHI TOMBS

The tombs of the legendary Qutb Shahi kings lie about a

kilometre away from Banjara Darwaza of the Golconda Fort.
Planned and built by the Qutb Shahis themselves, these tombs
are said to be the oldest historical monuments in Hyderabad. They
form a large group and stand on a raised platform. The tombs are
built in Persian, Pathan and Hindu architectural styles using grey
granite, with stucco ornamentation, the only one of its kind in the
world where an entire dynasty has been buried at one place.

TARAMATIBARADARI
Taramati Baradari is located at Ibrahimbagh, on the Osman
Sagar (Gandipet) Road, close to Golconda. The complex is spread
over a sprawling 7-acre area amidst lush green environs with the
backdrop of the famed Golconda Fort. The heritage monument
built by the Seventh Sultan of Golconda is accessed from the
complex.

With two fully equipped theatres, Taramati Baradari Culture Village

is the perfect venue for music concerts, performing arts, social
events etc. The Baradari illuminated in dynamic lighting forms the
backdrop of all activities.

its kind in the country. It is equipped with advanced technology
from Japan and is built on Naubat Pahad adjacent to Kala Pahad.

British Raj, joining the Union of India in 1948. In 1956, the
Hyderabad state was dissolved as part of the linguistic
reorganisation of states, and the Telugu speaking part of
Hyderabad state, known as Telanagna, was merged with Andhra

which operates in 92 countries.

Headquartered in Paris, France, the group owns, operates and

franchises 3,600 hotels on 5 continents representing several
diverse brands, from budget and economy lodgings to luxurious
accommodations in exotic locales

HISTORY

In the 1960s, the travel industry in France was booming, but

many new hotels were concentrated only in major urban areas
such as Paris. At the time, Paul Dubrule and Grard Plisson were
both living in the United States, working for major computer firms.
They went into business together, and in 1967, founded the SIEH
(Socit d'investissement ET d'exploitation hteliers) hotel group.
Having seen the success of American lodging properties in
suburban areas and along major highways, Dubrule and Plisson
opened their first American-style Novotel hotel outside Lille in
northern France.

In 1974, they launched the ibis brand with the opening of the
ibis Bordeaux. The following year, SIEH acquired the Courtepaille
and Mercure brands, and in 1980 the Sofitel hotel brand, which
then consisted of 43 hotels. Two years later, in 1982, the SIEH
bought Jacques Borel International, the then world-leading brand
offering restaurant vouchers. In 1983, the Group, which had
restaurant tickets and hotels, changed its name to the Accor
Group. In 1984, Dubrule and Plisson were elected "Managers of
the Year" by Frances Le Nouvel conomiste magazine. In 2010,
Accor SA sold 48 hotels for 367 million euros ($465 million) as part
of a plan to liquidate some real estate holdings including 31
properties in France, 10 in Belgium, and 7 in Germany. The sale
occurred over the next three years and cut debt by about
282 million euros.

The Accor Group continued to expand. In 1985, it launched Hotel

Formule 1 brand, offering basic accommodation at low prices

Five years later, in 1990, it entered the North American market by

acquiring Motel 6and later the Red Roof Inn chain, which it later
sold to Starwood and a consortium of Citis Global Special
Situations Group and Westbridge Hospitality Fund, L.P
respectively.

In the 1990s, it diversified to include Accor Casinos and in 2004,

bought a nearly 30 per cent stake in Club Mditerrane.

In June 2010, the shareholders of Accor approved the demerger of

its hotel and voucher businesses. Accor Services became
Edenred. The two entities started trading as separate companies
on the Paris stock exchange from 2 July 2011.In 2011, Accor
introduced its new brand positioning with the slogan: Open new
frontiers in hospitality.
Today, Accor has Frances largest number of hotels in the low,
medium and high-range price brackets in Paris and across the
country.

In November 2013, Accor redefined its group business model on

two core competencies: hotel operator and brand franchisor
(HotelServices) and hotel owner and investor (HotelInvest).

MANAGEMENT

In 2006, Gilles Plisson, nephew of Accor co-founder Gerard

Plisson, took over the group as CEO, replacing former CEO
Jean-Marc Espalioux. Accor appointed Serge Weinberg, head of
Weinberg Capital Partners, chairman of the supervisory board. In

ABOUT NOVOTEL

Novotel is a mid-scale hotel brand within the Accor

group, typically slotting between the Mercure and Sofitel
brands. Novotel has close to 400 hotels and resorts in 60
countries.

HISTORY

Novotel opened its first hotel in 1967 in Lille Lesquin,

France.

Break-in Controversy

Before Zhang Zhijun's arrival at Novotel Taipei Taoyuan

International Airport hotel as part of the 2014 Wang-Zhang
Meeting, the hotel had also been the scene for an incident
which was condemned by the Taiwan Association for Human
Rights. After members of protest organizations related to the
Sunflower Movement had been found to have booked a room
at the hotel, police and hotel staff reportedly entered the room
without authorization and demanded the guests check out
immediately Hotel management said in a statement that the
number of people staying in the room did not correspond with
the number registered at the reception. The extra guests
were seen moving around inside the hotel, and calls for an
explanation remained unanswered, the hotel said. The
activists later complained they had been unlawfully detained
in their room after the forced entry, with no water or food
allowed into the room.[ Seven of the guests sued Novotel for
this incident in September 2014

ACCOR IN INDIA
Accor entered the Indian market in 2006 with the
commencement of operations at the Novotel Hyderabad
Convention Centre and the Hyderabad International Convention
Centre. Committed to increasing its presence in the region, today
the group operates 23 hotels and 2 convention centres. The aim is
to have a network of 90 hotels in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri
Lanka and Bhutan under operation or under active development
by 2015, with at least 50 hotels under operation.

Accor is committed to growth via an asset right strategy and

continues to offer a unique range of development solutions to our
partners from management and selective franchising to joint
development and leases for our economy and budget brands,
supported by world-class technical support in hotel construction
and conversion. The group is the only international operator to
have invested significantly in India with InterGlobe Enterprises as
a leading partner and institutional partners such as GIC, Host and
SAMHI, particularly across the Novotel, ibis and Formule1 brands.

Accor is now focused on ensuring sustained network

expansion in line with the growth in the Indian domestic market,
growth in Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, intra SAARC travel,
intra-Asian travel demand, leveraging off the strong presence the
group has in Europe and the Middle East, key feeder markets for
the Indian sub-continent.

The network comprises nearly all of Accors distinctive and

powerful brands Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Grand Mercure,
Novotel, Mercure, ibis and Formule1 covering the full
spectrum, from luxury to budget. The Sofitel Mumbai BKC and the
Pullman Gurgaon Central Park commenced operations in 2012
and are distinctive examples of Accors luxury and upscale
products, in key locations.

With an average opening of 7-8 hotels annually, the group is

committed to operational excellence and excellent guest
experience, all with continued support from Accors strong
distribution platforms, excellent revenue management tools, the Le
Club Accor hotels loyalty programme and the Accor Advantage
Plus subscription programme.

Having brought global brands to India in the economy and

budget segments with the ibis and Formule1 brands respectively
that were adapted to the local market, Accor is now focusing on
the regionalization of its upscale Grand Mercure brand. We have
brought local relevance from the ground up to all our brands and
continue to do so, from design to operations.
Accors growth has been driven and supported by a talented
local team based in Gurgaon, together with strong regional
structures that provide the hotel network with the necessary
support. Accor India was listed as one of the Best Companies to
Work 2013 by the Great Place to Work Institute, a recognition that
we do not take lightly and are continually focused towards
attracting and developing our associates with targeted
programmes and development tools such as Academie Accor and
Accor JOBS. At the same time, we are committed to sustainability
with Accors global Planet 21 programme that underlies all our
development, construction and renovation activities and day to day
hotel operations.

CONCLUSION

This project is based on the organizational aspects of

NOVOTEL Hyderabad Convention Center this report elaborates
the working model and functions of all various departments which
help in the smooth functioning of the hotel. This project is based
on the individual departments at NOVOTEL Hyderabad the role
they play and how they are interrelated. It highlights the functions
of the hotel and how they should be organized in a systematic
manner and must function as a team because no department can
function independently.

This project reflects the working of NOVOTEL Hyderabad it

enlightens the strengths and weaknesses of the hotel and also
includes my personal suggestions for improvement.

This project would not have been possible without the

employees of the hotel and my Faculty guide. I thank all of them
for their support and help.
