Samples and Buttons

OVERVIEW
The mending stitch will be demonstrated to the students. Students will then mend their sample. The
sewing on of a button and sewing on of a button hole will be demonstrated. Students will then sew on a
button and buttonhole.

Objectives Students will demonstrate the


mending stitch on a hole they cut in
a sample. They will also demonstrate
sewing on a button with a shank.
They will complete their sample by
stitching a buttonhole.

Preparation Lesson will begin with a spiritual Materials: thread, sewing machine, 4
thought and prayer. Show short clip sample pieces, computer, video
of video (Quilters Anon). Have (quilters Anon)
students thread their machines.
10 minutes
Students will also need 4 sample
pieces which should have previously
cut.

Medning Purpose for mending stitch: For 2 fabric sample pieces, Scissors,
Stitch repairing holes or worn areas in sample worksheet*
fabric or knitting.
1. Grab 1 piece of fabric and snip a 5 minutes demonstrate
small hole.

Activity Part 1: 2 fabric sample pieces, scissors,


1. Lay 2 pieces of sample fabric hand needle, thread, buttonhole
together. presser foot, mallet and woodblock,
2. Need hand needle. Talk through video, projector for video, sweater
threading a hand needle. Have with a shank
students do this with me.
*Button handout, button, toothpick
3. Come through back side with
needle. Do not crisscross. 10 minutes demonstration
4. Insert toothpick before pulling
thread through. Wrap 3 or 4 times
before going through the next two
holes. This creates a shank.

A shank is a device for providing a


small amount of space in between a
garment and a button. Shanks are
necessary to provide space for fabric
to sit in between the button and the
garment when the garment is
buttoned. Shanks also allow a
garment to hang and drape nicely.

Show example of shank on a jacket.

5. Pull out toothpick. Show the shank


to the students.
6. Show shank by wrapping around
the thread 3 times. Pull through
fabric and knot.

Students are then able to finish any
