LEARNING SHEET LS 7.12
Comprehension Open-ended
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

The whale is an extremely large animal. The estimated weight of a blue whale
can be as much as twice that of a dinosaur and it can grow to a length of 100 feet or
more.
Though the whale looks very much like a fish, it is in fact a mammal which has
adapted itself to living permanently in water. The whales can be divided into two
groups: the baleen whale and the toothed whale.

The baleen whales do not have teeth but have enormous whalebone sieves known
as baleens in their mouth. These are used to strain the tiny organisms that they swallow
when they close their mouths. An example of a baleen whale is the blue whale. The
female baleen whales are bigger than the males.

Just as their name suggests, the toothed whales have teeth in their mouths. The
killer whale, an example of a toothed whale, has been known to be very fierce. It
charges at boats upon provocation and feeds on seals, polar bears and walruses. The
killer whales would even attack much larger whales when there is a shortage of food.
The toothed whales are different from the baleen whales in that the males are much
bigger.

All species of whales give birth to their young alive. In addition, whales suckle
their young just like other mammals. Like many animals on Earth, the whales are in
danger of extinction. For many years, Man has hunted them for oil and other materials.
Furthermore, many whales have been found to be stranded on beaches and suffocated to
death when their great weight crushes their lungs.
