Project Title:The Development Of Character Traits In Pre-K And Kindergarten Students

A. Project Abstract: (Refer to the detailed information located in the proposal/letter of intent)
My project is entitled The Development of Character Traits in Pre-K and Kindergarten Students. I find this topic very interesting because as a Leader at
the Extended Day Education Program, and future teacher, I feel that developing the positive character traits that are becoming more uncommon each year at an
early age is essential to helping students overall behavior now, and in the future. My essential question is How do various environmental factors aid in the learning
and development of positive character traits in young students? To clarify this, I will address: How group dynamics lead to the development of various personality
traits in Pre-K and Kindergarten students, what traits are considered the most important in our society for youths to develop, how quickly and completely a student
in this age group can begin developing these character traits, and which methods are the most effective in teaching young students the various character traits we
wish to develop in them visual, kinesthetic, auditory, or a combination of the three. My product will be the creation of a Pre-K and Kindergarten Character
Development Program at the Extended Day Education Program, and a portfolio that includes behavior charts, lesson plans, and examples of crafts and stories
used to aid in the program, as well as a detailed paper explaining my findings from this study. My product will take place over a period of 8 non-consecutive
weeks, due to school system holiday schedules, beginning November 7, 2016, and ending February 3, 2017. My Project participants will include students in Pre-K
and Kindergarten at the Extended Day Education Program, as well as the other leaders for these age groups. Students, their parents, and their teachers now and
in the future will benefit from this program, as students will be able to develop the positive character traits desired by the parents, current and future teachers, and
potential employers. My project does require me to present the information to the students, and my employers at EDEP, the presentation to my employers will
involve an explanation of my plan for the students each week, and examples of the lesson plans I wish to follow. The presentation to my students will involve a
simple explanation of each days activities and how they relate to each weeks character trait. To complete this project, I will need access to a computer, paper,
crafting supplies, and knowledge of each trait and how best to inculcate it in my students, as well as the data/ results I collect from the weekly behavior charts as
students hopefully improve with each weeks character trait development process.

B. Learning Skills: (List 2-4 specific goals and how they will stretch you)
Goal/Skill How will you be stretched

Organization Typically, when it comes to crafts and stories at EDEP, I make things up as I go along, but this project will
require me to develop lesson plans weeks in advance to complete each aspect of character development.

Presenting I often get nervous when presenting information before groups of people, but this project will require me to
present to the Capstone administration, my Bosses, My coworkers, and my students on an almost weekly
basis

Understanding Because I have always been successful in school, I never had to create alternative methods for me to learn
things, but this capstone will require me to address the needs of each individual student and their learning
style by using a variety of methods.
Observing Often, I am so concerned with completing all the preparations for our various activities at EDEP, that I
forget to take a moment to observe the individual groups of students and how they interact, but this project
will require m to observe students initia character traits, and how they grow

D. Project Justification:
This project can be classified as a capstone because it will help me learn how children development differently based on who surrounds them in a group, and how to take steps to
change that development for the better. This will help me in my career as a primary school teacher by allowing me to understand how to address and possibly prevent various
behavioral problems because I understand the factors that contribute to them. My project will stretch me tremendously because it will teach me how to use different methods of
education such as crafting, reading, and planning to influence the behavior of my after school students.

E. Product Justification:

My product be a Character development program instituted at Lee County EDEP for Pre-K and Kindergarten students, and a portfolio that will include examples of
crafts that the children have created to exemplify the various character traits, and an analysis of how the character program has influenced the development of
positive aspects of the childrens character, with weekly behavior charts to mark their progress over time. This will show my understanding of how to use various
methods to teach children character traits, as well as the developmental processes necessary to inculcate these traits.

G. Academic Integrity:

To show my academic integrity, I will provide pictures of the character development program, as well as lesson plans and schedules for each week of instruction,
weekly behavior charts (without names to protect the privacy of our students) to show the progress of individual students, and examples of the various stories and
crafts used in the program.
