information, guide writing, answer questions, and synthesize information.
LA 8.1: Reading: Students will learn and apply reading skills and strategies to comprehend text.
LA 8.1.6: Comprehension: Students will construct meaning by applying prior knowledge, using
text information, and monitoring comprehension while reading increasingly complex grade-level
literary and informational text.
LA 8.1.6.a: Analyze the meaning, reliability, and validity of text considering author's purpose and
perspective.
LA 8.1.6.b: Analyze and explain the relationships between elements of literary text (e.g.,
character development, setting, plot, conflict, point of view, inferred and recurring themes).

Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)


(onscreen) In the My Writing section of your notebook, use 3-5 sentences to respond to
the following: Think about your personal past as it relates to your life now. Do you think
your past affects you as you go through life? Why or why not? How do you think the
choices you make today might affect your life in the years to come?
Show Newscast (school announcements).

Lesson (30 minutes)


Continue cloze reading of Chapters 17 and 18 (whole class).
Manipulative: Notice & Note signpost cards (previously introduced)
When students find a Notice & Note signpost in the text, they will take the
appropriate card and place it in the envelope on their desk.
As cards are shown, pause in the reading and discuss the signposts the students
noticed. 4U

Closing (5 minutes)
Exit ticket: (separate handout)
"Choose to respond to one of the following: Write about an Aha Moment YOU
have about the text. Write a question you have about the story. Make a
prediction for what is coming next." 4U
