Development of Heart

Development of Heart

19 days gestation (3 weeks)

2 heart tubes = right and left
With normal body folding inwards => forms 1 single heart
tube
Tube enlarges cranially and centrally and forms
Single Ventricle cranially
Single Atrium caudally
Cranially the arterial end develops the aortic system
=> Connects as Truncus Arteriosus (TA)
TA continues with Bulbus Cordis (BC)
Caudally is venous end is the sinus venosus that
connects with the Single Atrium
Later theres a FOLD of the Heart => BC and Ventricle
move anterior to Atrium and Sinus Venosus

Development of Heart

After fold => 4 chambers

Atrioventricular Septum => Atrium and ventricles
meet
Septum between atrium forms => Septum Primum
Grows toward the A-V septum => Foramen
primum = closes when fuses to A-V septum
Another septum forms in atrium => Septum
secundum and theres a foramen secundum
Forms the foramen ovale and has blood flow
from right to left atrium
Bypasses non-functional lungs

Ventricles have a septum

Development of Heart

Interventricular defect
Interatrial defect => More common
Tetralogy of Fallot
Right ventricle hypertrophied
Interventricular septal defect with left to right shunt
Narrowing of the pulmonary artery/trunk because of
the
Overriding of the aorta (on top) of the pulmonary trunk
All of these defects can be treated surgically
If physiologically severe

Most foramen present at birth tend to close spontaneously.

Some may remain physiologically functional
