Introduction (Essential Question): When do I know whether to add an S or ES to make a word plural?

Objective: ELA.2.37: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar
and usage when writing.
Capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names.
Use commas in greetings and closing of letters.
Use an apostrophe to form contractions and frequently occurring possessives.
Generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words (e.g., cage/badge; boy/boil).
Consult reference materials, including beginning dictionaries, as needed to check correct
spellings.
Specific Objective: Students will learn how to spell their spelling words correctly by playing a
Spelling Bee game and rewriting them.
Direct Instruction:
1. I will review spelling words with the students by playing spelling bee. I will divide students into two
groups. Two students from each group will come to the front of the room. I will call out a spelling word
and the student to write it on the board and correct the fastest gains a point for their team. The first team
that reaches 20 wins. I will keep count of the points on the marker board.
2. I will pass out a blank sheet of paper and tell students to write their spelling words two times each.
3. After students are done, I will let them go back and check their spelling. I will tell students to fix their
mistakes.
Guided Practice:
Differentiation:
Tier 1: Students will write their spelling words under an example picture for each word.
Tier 2: Students will write their spelling words two times each.
Tier 3: Students will write their spelling words two times each.
Lesson Closure:
1. Students will go back and check their papers. Students will make sure they spelled their words correctly
when writing them twice. If they did not, student will go back and fix mistakes.
Independent Practice:
1. Students will write their spelling words twice on a blank sheet of paper.
Assessment: Participation
Students will have to score above mastery to pass this assignment. 80% of students will score above mastery.
