PROCEDURES

MEASURING ELECTRICAL COMPONENT USING MULTIMETER

A multimeter is a common device used to troubleshoot and measure properties of electricity in
components such as voltage, current and impedance/resistance. Proper knowledge on the use of a
multimeter allows you to troubleshoot delicate electronic components by determining how electricity
flows through them. You need to know on how to use two probes and when there is current flowing in a
device you intend to measure.

MEASURING VOLTAGE
Turn on the device to be measured.
Set the multimeter to VDC or VAC. This indicates whether you're testing direct current (DC) voltage or
alternating current (AC) voltage.

Plug the red wire into the positive socket on the multimeter and the black wire into the negative socket.
According to Science Buddies Electronics Primer, the negative socket is marked with "COM" for
"common" and the positive socket is marked with "V" for voltage.
Touch the positive lead to the terminal of the device that has a positive voltage and the negative lead to
the negatively-charged terminal. This applies when testing DC. When testing AC, there is no positive or
negative voltage. You'll be able to determine whether you have the leads connected properly by looking
at the measurement. If the voltage reading on the multimeter is negative, switch the leads.

MEASURING RESISTANCE
Switch the multimeter reading to ohms to detect resistance.
Turn off power of the appliance or components you intend to measure.
Touch the leads to opposite sides of the component at electrical contact points or wires, so electricity can
flow through the component and the meter can measure resistance.

MEASURING CURRENT
Set the multimeter to read amperage.
Turn off power of the component and break the circuit by removing a wire from its connecting point.
Plug the black lead into the negative socket, marked "COM", and the red lead into one of the amperage
sockets. According to the Northwestern University website, multimeters typically have sockets rated at
300mA and 10A, or 300milliamps and 10amps. Always plug the red lead into the 10A socket until you're
sure that the current is less than 300mA.
Connect your leads to the open ends of the circuit to reclose the circuit. Turn on power and get your
reading.
Turn off the power and reconnect the original circuit.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT

1. Remove the Phillips head screw that secures the rear battery door.
2. Open the battery compartment.
3. Replace the 1 x AA battery with a new one in appropriate polarity.
4. Secure the battery compartment

Disposal

You as the user are legally bound (battery ordinance) to return

all batteries and accumulators.
Disposal in the household garbage is prohibited!
You can hand over your used batteries/accumulators
gratuitously at the collection points for our branches in your
community or wherever batteries/accumulators are sold.

Follow the valid legal stipulations in respect of the disposal of

the device at the end of its life cycle

WARNING

Improper use of this multimeter can cause damage, shock, injury or death. Read and understand the
user's manual included in the device before operating the multimeter.
Always remove the test leads before replacing the battery or fuses.
Inspect the condition of the test leads and the meter itself for any damage before operating the meter.
Repair or replace any damage before use.
Use proper care when making measurements. If the voltage is greater than 25VAC rms or 35VDC. This
voltage is considered hazardous.
This is a class A equipment. It can cause interferences in the living quarters. In this case, the operator can
be required to carry out adequate measurement.
Always discharge capacitors and remove power from the device under test before performing Diode,
Resistance or Continuity tests.
Voltage checks on electrical outlets can be difficult and misleading because of the uncertainty of
connection to the recessed electrical contacts. Other means should be used to ensure that the terminals
are not "live".
If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the protection provided by the
equipment may be impaired.
This device is not a toy and must be keep out of reach of children. It contains hazardous objects as well as
small parts that the children could swallow. In case a child swallows any of them, please contact a
physician immediately.
Do not leave batteries and packing material lying around unattended. This can be dangerous for children
if they use them as toys.

For better assistance on technical concerns, please call us on 413-9788, 362-0393, 362-1240, 666-4568,

cdrking_onlinetech01@yahoo.com, cdrking_onlinetech02@yahoo.com, cdrking_onlinetech02@yahoo.com
In case that device will not be used for an extended period of time, remove batteries to prevent them
from improper usage.
Expired or damaged batteries can cause cauterization on contact with the skin. Always use suitable hand
gloves in such cases.
See that the batteries are not short-circuited. Do not throw them in fire as it may ca use explosion.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION's

1. What is the difference between a digital and analog multimeter?

Digital multimeter have an LCD display while and analog meter has a needle that physically moves
around to detect measurement of voltage, current or resistance.

2. What is the difference in the Peak and Mix/Max modes on multimeters?

Peak mode measures the negative and positive peak voltage of a signal. For a 120 volt AC line, the
peaks would read around -169 volts and +169 volts. Typically they work with peaks around 250
microseconds or longer. The Mix/Max mode is the lowest and highest reading that a multimeter
displays from the time the Mix/Max recording function started. Generally, they need the measured
signal's minimum or maximum to be 200 to 350 milliseconds longer or longer in order to get an
accurate reading.

3. Why does my multimeter do not go to zero in the ac volts mode?

If it's a true-rms multimeter such as the Fluke 87V, it will not go to zero and should not be zeroed.
Most of the true-rms models have a minimum current level specification and AC voltage for both the
AC current modes and AC volts, generally within 3%-5%of range. When a signal is detected above the
minimum level, the multimeter will meet its correct accuracy specifications. For more information,
look at the user's manual included, in the section labeled Specifications near the end of the manual.
