Google Earth File 7: Airport_Snow
Google Earth File 8: Pop_Center
Google Earth File 9: Airport_Pop_Center

Open Google Earth on your computer.

Open the Google Earth file titled States.

Open the Google Earth file titled Criteria_States. These states were determined to
be potential locations based on the following factors:

Minimum Wage = $7.25 or less

Union = Right to Work only

Tax Burden = 9% or less

Education = 75% or higher

Power = .10 or less

How does this criteria differ from what you chose?

Open the Google Earth file titled Airports_All. The file will rotate Earth to include Alaska;
rotate back to the lower 48 states and zoom in. Airports will appear. Clicking on an airport will
provide data about it; N_LENGTH1 is the runway length in feet.

Your company has determined that they can only consider airports with at least 7000 foot
runways. Open the Google Earth file titled Airport_7000Feet. Turn off the previous file.

Open the Google Earth file titled Snow_8_Inch.

Considering the fact that on-time deliveries are vital to your companys success, how might this
file help you to further narrow your potential locations?

The company would want to locate in areas with low snowfall so that weather didnt affect
delivery times.

Open the Google Earth file titled Airport_Snow. This file shows all airports with at least
7000 foot runways located in areas with less snow.

Open the Google Earth file titled Pop_Center. The location shown represents the
population center of the United States.

Why might locating the population center be important for an air freight company?

The company would want to be able to fly to this place or be close to it to take advantage of
the large market there.
Open the Google Earth file titled Airport_Pop_Center. This file shows the only airport
located within 300 miles of the United States population center that meets all other criteria. Turn
off all other files to explore the area in satellite view.

What city is this airport located in?

Memphis, Tennessee.
What major air freight company can you find that is already located in this area?

FedEx CTC
What additional factors would you have to consider if you were finding a location for a more
industrial industry, such as copper or steel production?

You would have to consider the proximity to the inputs, such as iron ore or copper ore,
since these industries are bulk-reducing.
Air freight distribution is neither bulk-gaining nor bulk-reducing. Where would a bulk-
reducing industry want to locate their company?

They would want to locate near the source of their inputs, such as a copper mine for the
copper industry or a cotton thread factory for a fabric factory.
