Unit 2 Paper: Food and You

English 101-24372; Prof. Rebecca Chmiel

Background: The issues surrounding food are manifold and
increasingly political. America is torn between ethical
concerns (like environmental impact and taking a stance on
local/global businesses) and practical issues (such as food
prices). This unit we will be working through the issues
surrounding the food industry. You will enter the
conversation on food as a well-read individual.
Prompt: In 5-7 pages, summarize the issues surrounding your
chosen topic and respond to those positions in such a way
that the reader understands your own ideas. You must include
supporting details from at least 3 of the assigned readings
during this unit. Should you choose, you may also include
information from other understanding or observations.
Topic Options:

1) Morality and Food:

There are many issues surrounding the idea of morality in relation to food, and many disagree
about the best solution. In The Locavore Myth James E. McWilliams responds to concerns
about green farming, in Escape from the Western Diet Michael Pollan argues that the food
industry uses science to produce unhealthy food choices for its own financial gain, and in
What Are You Buying When You Buy Organic? Steven Shapin suggests that the idea of
organic being better is too simplistic. If you choose this topic, you will write an essay in which
you take part in the on-going conversation of one aspect of food ethics. You will summarize
the various opinions surrounding the issue and provide a response that indicates your own
ideas on the topic.
(or)
2) Food, Health, and Responsibility:
The idea that there is something wrong with the way Americans are eating is not new. Obesity
has a massive impact on health and healthcare in America, causing diabetes, heart disease, high
blood pressure, and more long term illnesses. The CDC reported in 2015 that no single state
had less than 20% obesity in all of America, with 25 of the 50 states having more than 30%
obesity rates. Although all the authors recognize that this is a problem, there is an ongoing
discussion over the best solution. If you choose this topic, you will write an essay in which you
take part in the on-going conversation of food, health, and responsibility. You will summarize
the different sides of the debate and provide a response that indicates your own ideas on the
topic.

Write five full to seven pages in MLA format. You should:

1. Ensure your reader understands your ideas by including a well-written,
debatable response to the conversation as your thesis. It should be
somewhere towards the end of your introduction.
2. Summarize key issues surrounding the topic you choose.
3. Use templates from They Say, I Say to frame your responses to the
authors, present evidence, or provide clear transitions between ideas.
4. Respond to the authors ideas using analysis and well-written prose.
5. Maintain MLA format and academic writing style throughout the
essay.
