Whether love is defined as the sweetest thing, whether it makes the world go
round, or whether as the song claims, its all you need, a popular belief is that love
is as important as breathable air. Even the high divorce rate has not interfered with
the belief that living alone is unnatural or that there is no happiness outside
commitment to one other person. A first mistake requires the search for the right
choice next time, and a newly single persons claim of being happy is met with
disbelief and offers of matchmaking. The myth is not only that there is someone for
everyone but that love and talk of love can substitute for every other human

Gregory is my beautiful gray Persian cat. He walks with pride and grace,
performing a dance of disdain as he slowly lifts and lowers each paw with the
delicacy of a ballet dancer. His pride, however, does not extend to his appearance,
for he spends most of his time indoors watching television and growing fat. He
enjoys TV commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and 9 lives. His familiarity
with cat food commercials has led him to reject generic brands of cat food in favor
of only the most expensive brands. Gregory is as finicky about visitors as he is
about what he eats, befriending some and repelling others. He may snuggle up
against your ankle, begging to be petted, or he may imitate a skunk and stain your
favorite trousers. Gregory does not do this to establish his territory, as many cat
experts think, but to humiliate me because he is jealous of my friends. After my
guests have fled, I look at the old fleabag snoozing and smiling to himself in front of

Once in a long while, four times so far for me, my mother brings out the metal
tube that holds her medical diploma. On the tube are gold circles crossed with
seven red lines each joy ideographs in abstract. There are also little flowers that
look like gears for a gold machine. According to the scraps of labels with Chinese
and American addresses, stamps, and postmarks, the family airmailed the can from
Hong Kong in 1950. It got crushed in the middle, and whoever tried to peel the
labels off stopped because the red and gold paint come off too, leaving silver

Hers
The first time you called her pretty, it didnt occur to me to worry. My nails
are always chipped and my clothes are always black and the scent of
cigarettes buried in my hair wafts into every empty space, filling in all the
cracks, but you one told me that pretty isnt about lace dresses and clean hair
and the smell of lilies on my wrists, and I took that to heart, the way I do your
every word. It didnt occur to me that maybe you wouldnt always mean it,
that just because someone says something on a summer day doesnt mean
theyll still feel it when the ground is brown and wet and the leaves cant hold
on to the drops that side right past them. There is a nook between your jaw
and your shoulder that should be saved for my chin, my cheekbone, for
moments when I need to rest against something true, but these days it smells
like lilies, a perfume-laced threat in my nostrils. We sit in silence more often
now, trying not to drum our fingers on scratched tabletops, or tap our feet out
of sync. You hand in mine feels limp, different, strange. This morning I thought
about buying a white dress, holding it up against my skin. I tried saying
pretty out loud to my reflection, but my tongue felt like it wasnt my own.
