Resume Reflection

The anatomy of the human body has always been intriguing to me, especially when I was little. I

discovered an interest in the dental field about a year ago when I had to wear braces. As I watched dental

hygienists socialize with patients, learn specifics about teeth and teeth cleaning, and perform certain tasks all

while helping patients achieve a great smile, I became interested in the profession. When I was young, my

interests varied from photography, writing, marine biology, and becoming a veterinarian. However, just recently

my curiosity about the human body was discovered. As I combined my love for being social with others and my

interest in human body functions, I found a dental hygienist to be a great career option.

Both of my parents attended Chico State University in Chico, California, and my brother got accepted

into Chico this year as well. I found Chico to be a great option for college because my parents told me there is a

Dental Hygienist Program on campus. However, as I was researching the program for the assignment, I was

unable to find the program and assumed it was taken out.

In spite of my drawbacks, I continued to search for dental programs within schools in California, and

found one at University of Southern California, Cerritos College, and one at the Santa Rosa Junior College. I have

always wanted to go to college and possibly live in Southern California, so that location was my main focus for

this assignment.

I contacted the professors and/or the directors of those programs and asked multiple questions about not

only studying the major in college, but also the process of becoming a dental hygienist. I chose to contact Zach

Woolfork, who is the program director for the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of University of Southern

California, as well as Carol Hatrick who is a professor for dental hygiene at the Santa Rosa Junior College.

A few questions I asked the professors were:

1. What makes dental hygiene an interesting major? What makes being a dental hygienist a worthwhile

experience?

2. What is difficult about studying dental hygiene in college?

3. What are the pros and cons of being a dental hygienist?

Anxiously waiting for an email back, I received a response from Carol Hatrick who offered to set an

appointment to meet for an interview. Also, Zach Woolfork offered to answer my questions via email.

Although I am very excited to receive answers to my questions, I have not been able to set a date for an in

person interview with Carol, nor has Zach replied to my questions in an email. When I have received answers to

my questions, I will attach an addendum to this assignment with their answers as well as my thoughts about the

profession; I will include whether or not my my feelings about dental hygiene have changed.
