Name: Kashish Doshi Set 2

Data Sheet:

Part A - Preparation of 0.1 M NaOH Solution

Mass of sodium hydroxide pellets

____________________________ g

Part B - Standardization of NaOH Solution

Trial #4 (if
Trial #1 Trial #2 Trial #3 needed)

CHEM 4438 Volumetric Analysis 6-6

Show a sample calculation of the concentration of NaOH solution for Trial #1. Use
significant figures.
Moles of NaOH = moles of KHP = Mass of KHP/ Molar Mass of KHP

= 0.3016 / 204.2200 = 1.4768 * 10-3

Concentration of NaOH = Moles of NaOH/ Volume of NaOH used (in L)

= 1.4768 * 10-3/14.00
= 0.1054 M = 0.11 M

Part C - Assay of m-Toluic Acid Sample

Assay of MTA* (% m-toluic acid)

* Show a sample calculation of the actual mass of m-toluic acid contained in the sample
and the assay of m-toluic acid for Trial #1. Use significant figures.

Questions:
1. What are two real sources of error in this lab?
Parallax Error caused by not reading the meniscus in the burette keeping it at eye level.
Error in weighing the solids at the start of the lab

2. What is the difference between the endpoint and the equivalence point?
Equivalence point is when the moles of the titrant and substance being titrated are equal
End Point is when the moles of the titrant exceed the moles of the substance being titrated
significantly

3. Describe in your own words the meaning of (a) acclimatization and (b) quantitative
transfer?
Acclimatization is the process by which one adjusts to its new surroundings which have been
changed by altering temperature, pH or solution
Quantitative transfer is the transfer of something such that no amount of substance is left
behind in the container and all of the substance has been transferred.

4. Report the mean and median value average for the assay percent of m-toluic acid. Use the
3
Dixon Q-test to check for any outliers at a 95% confidence level. Use the link to read an
4
introduction to the Q-test and the confidence level.

5. Assume the true value of m-toluic acid is >99.3 % purity. Based on your results,
comment on the accuracy of the titration method compared to the true value and if the
titration method is reproducible to obtain consistent results?

3
Note: Dixon Q-test if N = 3, Qcrit = 0.970 at 95%
