Computing
Cloud / Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is a general term for the delivery of

hosted services over the internet.
Cloud computing enables companies to consume a
compute resource, such as a virtual machine VMs,
Storage or an application, as a utility -- just like electricity
-- rather than having to build and maintain computing
infrastructures in house.
Cloud / Cloud Computing

Cloud computing boasts several attractive benefits for businesses

and end users. Three of the main benefits of cloud computing are:
Self Service Provisioning: End users can spin up compute resources
for almost any type of workload on demand. This eliminates the
traditional need for IT administrators to provision and manage
compute resources.
Elasticity: Companies can scale up as computing needs increase
and scale down again as demands decrease. This eliminates the
need for massive investments in local infrastructure which may or
may not remain active.
Pay Per Use: Compute resources are measured at a granular level,
allowing users to pay only for the resources and workloads they use.

Data Growth and IT Complexity
Surge in data requires a new approach for speed, agility, and
security

By 2020, more than a trillion applications will be

exchanging 58 zettabytes of digital data over 100 billion
devices
Open Source and Its Impact on Cloud
Computing

Open Source is not tied to a single vendors roadmap with contributions from a
large community of SMEs and developed with a broader set of use cases in
mind

OPEN SOURCE !!
OpenStack !

OpenStack is a community of open source

developers, participating organizations and
users who are building and running the open
source cloud operating system.
OpenStack is an Infrastructure as a service
which is known as a Cloud Operating System,
that takes resources such as compute, storage,
network, virtualization technologies and
controls those resources at a data center level
OpenStacks basic requirement: Cloud must
be simple to implement and massively scalable

OpenStack
OpenStack Architecture

Modular architecture
Designed to easily scale out
Based on (growing) set of core services
OpenStack Architecture

Keystone
Identity Service
Common authorization framework
Manages users, tenants and roles
Pluggable backends (SQL, PAM, LDAP, IDM, etc)
OpenStack Architecture

NOVA
Core compute service comprised of
Compute Nodes hypervisors that run virtual machines
Supports multiple hypervisors KVM, Xen, LXC, Hyper-V and ESX
Distributed controllers that handle scheduling, API calls, etc
Native OpenStack API and Amazon EC2 compatible API
OpenStack Architecture

Glance
Image service
Stores and retrieves disk images (virtual machine templates)
Supports Raw, QCOW, VMDK, VHD, ISO, OVF & AMI/AKI
Backend storage : Filesystem, Swift, Gluster, Amazon S3, Ceph
OpenStack Architecture

Swift
Object Storage service
Modeled after Amazon's S3 service
Provides simple service for storing and retrieving arbitrary data
Native API and S3 compatible API
OpenStack Architecture

Neutron
Network Service
Provides framework for Software Defined Network (SDN)
Plugin architecture
Allows integration of hardware and software based network solutions
Open vSwitch, Cicso UCS, Standard Linux Bridge, Nicira NVP
OpenStack Architecture

Cinder
Block Storage (Volume) Service
Provides block storage for virtual machines (persistent disks)
Similar to Amazon EBS service
Plugin architecture for vendor extensions
eg. NetApp driver for Cinder
OpenStack Architecture

Heat
Template describes the infrastructure for a cloud application
Provides an autoscaling service that integrates with Telemetry
Manages the whole lifecycle of the application
OpenStack Architecture

Ceilometer
The efficient collection of metering data in terms of CPU and network costs.
Configuring the type of collected data to meet various operating requirements.
Accessing and inserting the metering data through the REST API.
Expanding the framework to collect custom usage data by additional plugins.
Producing signed metering messages.
OpenStack Architecture

Horizon
Dashboard
Provides simple self service UI for end-users
Basic cloud administrator functions
Define users, tenants and quotas
No infrastructure management
Use Cases

OpenStack in CERN

>1300 compute nodes

Runs >10000 Vms simultaneously

Deployed >250 Vms in <5 mins
