COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Code: Credit Units: Three (3) units

Prerequisite: Undergraduate Steel Design Required knowledge: Structural Analysis
Course Title: Advanced Steel Design
Course Description: Design of members and frames of structural steel and their connections. Topics
include principle of structural design, loads, types of steel, tension members, columns, beam-columns,
bolted and welded connections, plate-girders, seismic design. Emphasis will be on the AISC LRFD. Review
of journal papers on testing, analysis and design of steel structures, Projects on structural design of trusses
and frames.

General Objectives:
1. To understand the fundamental concepts in the analysis and design steel members and
structures
2. To introduce Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) as a design alternative
3. To introduce computer-aided structural analysis and design
Value Aims:
1. To develop an awareness in the students concerning their moral and social responsibility in
carrying-out proper and accurate analysis and design of steel structures to satisfy safety and
serviceability,
2. To develop honesty, patience, critical thinking and perseverance in students through the
course requirements in the form of problem sets, exercises, exams, projects and reports.
3. To develop teamwork through the group design projects.

2. LRFD Manual and Specification (1994), AISC
3. LRFD Specifications (1999), AISC
4. International Journals : Engineering Journal (AISC), Journal of Structural Engg (ASCE),
Engineering Structures (Elsevier), Steel and Composite Structures (Techno-Press)
Policies:
1. Grading System: The general average is based on 25% Midterm Exam, 20% Problem sets
(Written), 20% Oral Reports, 5% Journal paper review, and 30% Design Project. The
following scale will be used to compute the final grade:
4.0 : 92.0 - 100.0 3.5 : 84.9 - 91.9 3.0: 80.0 84.9
2.5 : 70.0 79.9 2.0 : 65.0 69.9 1.5 : 60.0- 64.9
1.0 : 50.0 59.9 0.0 : 59.9 below
2. Problem sets must be written in short bond paper and must be submitted on the set deadline
to get the maximum grade. Late submission will have corresponding deduction in grade (10%
per week late)
3. No make-up will be given for any missed quiz. A missed quiz is given a grade of 0.
4. Oral Report Individual reports on problems, journal papers and assigned topics. This is a
requirement in the course to evaluate the students ability in oral communication.
5. Design Project The final requirement is a group design project (e.g. design of a roof truss,
industrial frame, gable frame, etc).
6. Journal paper review (optional 5% bonus) Review one technical journal paper. The review
must include a summary of the important points of the paper, the significance of the paper in
steel design, lessons you learned from the paper and recommendations (e.g., if you were to
extend the paper what additional tests, new equations, would you do, a possible thesis work,
etc).
