The Graphical System Design Musabaka 2017

Contest Details

At National Instruments, we are committed to giving engineers of all ages and discipline the tools to
tackle the toughest challenges around the globe. Students like you are engineering a better world, from
inexpensive medical devices to complex underwater autonomous vehicles, using the NI LabVIEW
graphical development environment. Show us how you are incorporating LabVIEW system design
software into your design project for a chance to win big prizes.

Participation Criteria

You are eligible to participate in this contest, if you fit the following requirements:

You are an engineering or a science student


You are a student of a Registered Educational Institute in one of the following countries:
Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania,
Morocco, Oman, Palestine Territory, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab
Emirates or Yemen
You are NOT an employee of National Instruments Corporation or an employee of a National
Instruments subsidiary
You are NOT involved in any part of the administration and execution of this Contest
You are NOT an immediate family (parent, sibling, spouse, and child) or household member of a
National Instruments employee, an employee of a National Instruments subsidiary, or a person
involved in any part of the administration and execution of this Contest
Participating teams must be of a maximum of three members per team. It is mandatory that every
team has a faculty member supervising the project
Teams should have one professor or industry project advisor
The use of LabVIEW graphical system design software is mandatory. (The use of NI Hardware is
optional)
Deadlines

February 28, 2017: submit a 1-3 page abstract* detailing your idea for a project having interesting
application(s).
March 15, 2017: Phase 1-Results announced. Teams who have submitted eligible abstract will be
notified to proceed with the following contest stages.
May 15, 2017: Submission of final papers
June 05, 2017: Phase 2-Election of the top three finalists
June 26, 2017: Winner Election: 50% online voting; 50% voting by NI committee.
The winning team will present his project at NIDays 2017 Beirut, Lebanon in September!

Abstracts should contain the following:


Details of all team members as well as advisor (including full name and email address)
Project title
Problem statement (in not more than 200 words)
Approach towards solving the problem (in not more than 300 words)
System Architecture Picture (you can upload up to 3 images)

Note: Incomplete abstracts will be disqualified.

Final Papers Submissions

Format: Please use the NI template as your format for submission in order for you to have further use of
your paper.

Title of the final paper should be the following: Name of project - Name of university
Your final paper should be submitted at: gsd.musabaka@ni.com

Support
NI Software: The National Instruments team of support engineers will be available to help the
participating teams with any software support they may need. For any technical assistance with your
project you can contact support: arabia.support@ni.com or +961-1-646 111
NI Hardware*: NI will be loaning myDAQ and myRIO on a first come first serves basis; teams to first
submit their abstract and ask for the required hardware will receive the hardware for a specified amount
of time under the NI loaner agreement.
*The use of NI Hardware is not mandatory for the eligibility of the project.
Online Training: An optional free online training will be provided on NI LabVIEW, NI myDAQ, and NI
myRIO.

How technically challenging is the application?


What are the benefits of the solution to the community and are those benefits clearly articulated?
How innovative is the solution?
Phase 2 Final Paper Evaluation Criteria
Entries will be judged on the criteria as below:
The Work will be judged for 100% which is sub divided as below:
25% - Quality of prototype prepared and documentation
20% - Innovation: Originality and creativity
20% - Is the solution a realistic, efficient and a good way to solve the problem? (How
much does the solution save time and is cost effective?)
15% - Relevance of the Solution and impact on society
10% - Familiarity with hardware used and LabVIEW
10% - Are the system benefits clearly articulated and apparent?

Trip to NIDays 2017, Beirut, Lebanon for 3 students and the mentor in September
Free pass to NIWeek 2018, Austin, Texas for students and mentor
Get nominated as the Arabia entry for the Global NI Student Design Contest
Eligibility to take the CLAD Exam for free

How will your entry be potentially used?

Other than what is set forth below, we are not claiming any ownership rights to your entry. However, by
submitting your entry, you:

Are granting us an irrevocable, worldwide right and license, for which you have received a
sufficient remuneration, for the duration of the protection of the copyrights to: (i) reproduce,
copy, modify or alter your entry with all known all later developed means; (ii) use, review, assess,
test and otherwise analyze your entry and all its content in connection with this and any future
contests sponsored by National Instruments; and (ii) feature your entry and all its content in
connection with the promotion of this Contest in all media (now known or later developed)
Except where prohibited, hereby waive any and all so-called moral rights or any similar right
that you may have or hereinafter acquire in the entry and all its content, and to the extent that you
cannot, you hereby consent to us doing or omitting to do any act that would otherwise infringe such
moral rights or any such similar rights
Agree to sign any necessary documentation that may be required for us and our designees to make use
of the rights you granted above
Understand and acknowledge that National Instruments and other entrants may have developed or
commissioned materials similar or identical to your submission and you waive any claims you may
have resulting from any similarities to your entry
Understand that we cannot control the incoming information you will disclose to our representatives
in the course of entering, or what our representatives will remember about your entry. You also
understand that we will not restrict work assignments of representatives who have had access to your
entry. By entering this Contest, you agree that use of information in our representatives unaided
memories in the development or deployment of our products or services does not create liability for
us under this agreement or copyright or trade secret law
Understand that you will not receive any compensation or credit for use of your entry, other than
what is described in these Official Rules.
Please note that following the end of this Contest your entry may be posted on a website selected by us
for viewing by visitors to that website. We are not responsible for any unauthorized use of your entry by
visitors to this website. While we reserve these rights, we are not obligated to use your entry for any
purpose, even if it has been selected as a winning entry.

What may disrupt the contest?

If someone cheats, or if a virus, bug, catastrophic event, or any other unforeseen and unexpected event
that cannot be reasonably anticipated or controlled, affects the fairness and/or integrity of this Contest, we
reserve the right to cancel, change or suspend this Contest. This right is reserved whether the event is due
to human or technical error. If a solution cannot be found to restore the integrity of the Contest, we
reserve the right to select winners based on the criteria specified above from among all eligible entries
received before the unexpected event. If you attempt to compromise the integrity or the legitimate
operation of this Contest by hacking, cheating or committing fraud in ANY way, we may seek damages
from you to the fullest extent permitted by law. Further, we may ban you from participating in any of our
future contests. So please play fairly.
