Davidson, Karren. About Our Center. About Our Center. Trax Equestrian Center, n.d. Web. 16

March 2017. http://www.traxequestrian.org/Center/center-index

This website is an information page for a non profit organization designed to help children with

special needs therapeutically ride horses. Trax is overseen by a licensed speech pathologist, and

occupational and behavior therapists who evaluate the students. The mission is to improve motor

functions of the students by learning how to ride and caring for horses. This site is very

important to my research because for my capstone I would like to volunteer my time here.

Disabilities. American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, n.d.

and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. Intellectual

children.

Joseph, Thomas. Sports and Children with Special Needs. Health Encyclopedia. University of

Rochester Medical Center, n.d. Web. 16 March 2017.

https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?

contenttypeid=160&contentid=20

This website describes the benefits of physical activities on the intellectually disabled person.

Some of the benefits include the obvious physical health such as better fitness, better control of

weight, and reduced risk of diseases. The other benefits to these sports were more than just

physical such as better emotional and psychological health, improved self-esteem and improved

social and motor skill. This site is good for my research because I would like to know the

benefits of sports on an intellectually disabled person before volunteering my time to the cause.

Langtree, Ian. Disability Sports: Information on Sport for the Disabled. Disabled World.

Disabled World, 5 November 2016. Web. 16 March 2017. https://www.disabled-

world.com/sports/

This website describes adaptive sports, also known as disabled sports for athletes that have

physical or mental disabilities. Sports do not only have effects on the physical body of a person

but for those with disabilities but rehabilitating effects into society. Seventy two percent of

disabled people play no sports or are involved in any physical activity, compared to forty seven

percent of non-disabled people. This site is important to my research because sports for the

mentally disabled is important and I would like to help this cause.

What is Equestrian Therapy? Equestrian Therapy. GeneratePress, n.d. Web. 16 March 2017.

http://www.equestriantherapy.com

This site describes equine assisted therapy as a form of therapy that makes use of horses to help

promote emotional growth. Equestrian therapy is usually applied to patients with ADD, anxiety,

autism, dementia, delay in mental development, down syndrome and other genetic syndromes.

Equine therapy has been used to teach troubled youth how to learn, react and follow

instructions. Horses are a good animal to use for therapy because they respond and give feedback

to the riders behavior and have also been known to mirror the riders emotion. This site is

important to my research because I would like to volunteer my time in the field of equine therapy

with mentally disabled children.
