What I Learned from ESL 4230

For every second language learner, writing is one of essential parts. I am an international

student, and I will work at somewhere in the United States. Therefore, I need to learn how to

write and manipulate writing skills. I have taken writing classes since I came here. This semester,

I am taking a research paper class. There are many things I learned in the research paper class,

such as how to research and how to write research papers. There is a great deal of rules to write

research papers. By learning the rules, they are going to help me.

I have learned many things for research papers, such as how to research and how to write.

Researching skills are the most important for research papers. I needed to use only right

information from right sources. For example, people have to use appropriate website usually,

such as links that include .com, .edu, or .gov. To find specific and perfect matched information

for the papers often made me consume. However, I got ability to find absolutely right

information because I did use the skills continuously. Also, I learned how to write the research

papers including grammar skills and many rules. Grammar skills guide me how to make

sentences correctly. My papers always needed to be fixed because it had many grammatical

mistake. Because of being fixed, I have accumulated grammatical knowledge which is the most

important for any languages in my opinion. To know rules for the research papers, such as how

to cite sources and using appropriate words are required for the class. Citation was one of the

most difficult things because there are many kinds of sources, and I had to change the sequence

of the citations depending on sources that I used. In addition, I needed to know appropriate

words for the papers. For example, using a lot of and so is not appropriate for the papers.

Therefore, I need to use many and very instead of them. How I should cite sources and use right

words are one of what I learned the most comparing other things that I learned. All of those are

going to help and has helped me very much.

Because of having those skills, I have completed assignment of other classes, such as

biology and sociology that I am taking this semester. I realized that those are necessary for every

class in college and even anywhere in the future like at work. I major in nursing, and it will

assign me much writing assignment. Nursings writing assignment means that it must be a very

medical and specific subject. Therefore, I will absolutely need those skills to complete and get

high enough grades. Also, a nurse is usually charge of taking care of patients and doing paper

work which might be required good writing skills because it must be official, and it cannot give

people any anarchies or uncomfortable feelings by the paper I wrote.

To sum up, any writing classes are very important for me to get writing skills because I

am a second language learner who needs to learn how to write. In this semester, I obtained

writing ability by taking the research paper class. For example, I have known how I should get

correct and adequate information and compose the papers. I also learned many rules of research

papers. What I learned from the class has already helped me and will be helping me in other

classes and at work.
