Project 2: Still-Life
Theme: Origami Forms

In this project, you will create a realistic, observational drawing of an origami still-life arranged
by you! Your goal is to create:
Strong Composition that Showcases Movement within the Paper Plane
Wide Range of Graduated Values/Tones
Strong Contrast Between Highlights and Shadows
Proper Pencil Control Techniques
Built Value and Directionality
Observational Skills
Proper Scale, Proportions, Placed Highlight and Shadows

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Learn to Fold an Origami Crane and Other Origami Creations

First fold at least two origami cranes. Then, look up other origami folding instructions to
include one additional object in your composition.

Step 2: Arrange Origami Still-Life

Design origami still-life using your origami creations. Arrange your cranes so
there is a strong sense of movement throughout the composition. Origami
has very strong angles that have strong influence on how the eye will travel
through your composition, so be sure to keep their eye within the
composition. Once you have your composition set, mark the areas you want
them places, and glue these to white cardstock with elmers glue to prevent
shifting.

Step 3: Prepare Your Drawing Paper

Create a 1 border on your toned paper using a ruler. Remember, two points make a line and
will ensure your border is straight.

Step 4: Plan Your Final Composition

Use Viewfinder to create 4 thumbnail sketches of your composition from
different angles. Try propping it up, so it is at or above your eye level. Or
set it below your eye level. Considering zooming-in, so you include
portions of the composition.

Step 5: Create Your Realistic, Observational Drawing

First, use a sighting stick to lightly draw contour lines in perspective. Then,
determine your light source. Using pencil control techniques and observational
skills to apply accurate values to your forms. Note, we will use a white pencil
for highlights at the very end. This should not mix with the graphite pencil.

Step 6:Turn-In Your Project

Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the
link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit folder on Schoology.
You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your
slides. For this artwork, write your artist statement in the form of a
haiku poem!
