1. Overview: I will attend David Stovalls lecture Embracing Radical Imagery in Education
2. Objectives: S tandard 5 - Middle Level Professional Roles - I will learn more about what
urban education looks like and what we can do as teachers to create a comfortable and
welcoming classroom environment despite differences
3. Description of Activities: I will attend and actively engage in David Stovalls lecture
Embracing Radical Imagery in Education
4. Evaluation Criteria: By attending this lecture I will get a better understanding of what it
is like to be a teacher in an urban setting and some of the challenges that may arise and
what I can do to be advocate for my students.
5. Synthesis of Learning: T his lecture was very beneficial as I was a new member of the
Urban Teaching Cohort and am very interested in learning all that I can about education
in an urban setting. David Stovall talks about the oppressive and prison like schools that
students in urban areas, such as Chicago, are attending school in. As teachers we have
to provide our students with an education that embraces their cultures and where they
come from. We cant only assume the role of teacher but also have to be an advocate for
our students and be that figure in their life.

1. Overview: I will attend Dr. Robert Putnams lecture titled Our Kids: The American
Dream in Crisis
2. Objectives: Standard 1: Young Adolescent Development - By attending this lecture I
was able to learn how much family plays a role in a childs life.
3. Description of Activities: A ttendance at this lecture and being engaged throughout the
presentation.
4. Evaluation Criteria: By attending this lecture I will be able to gain a better
understanding of some students that I will have in my future classrooms, especially
those who come from backgrounds that differ from mine.
5. Synthesis of Learning: T his lecture was very eye-opening and it was based off of
Putnams book, Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis. In his presentation he talked
about two families from Port Clinton, Ohio and how they both started out the same. Both
families had grandparents that were hard working factory workers, one family had kids
go to college and the other family did not. At first, that decision was okay because they
could work in the factories but when those begin to close their is a huge inequality gap
that arises. One family had a daughter who was a Harvard graduate while the other had
a daughter who was unemployed despite the fact that they grew up in the same town
and played together as kids. There is a big inequality gap in this country that has truly
put the American Dream in crisis. Hearing this story made me realize that this is
extremely common in our country and their are children all over the country that are
living in poverty and have parents that are not educated. This plays a role in the
classroom and its something that I will have to keep in mind as I begin my career as a
teacher.

1. Overview: I will attend Judith Browne Dianis Lecture, Eradicating the School-to-Prison
Pipeline
2. Objectives: Standard 1 - Young Adolescent Development - I will learn about children
growing up in a school system that, in some places, resembles a prison. This can really
hinder a childs development and what they think about themselves.
3. Description of Activities: I will actively engage in Judith Drown Dianis lecture,
Eradicating the School-to-Prison Pipeline
4. Evaluation Criteria: By attending this lecture I will take an in-depth look at the
oppressive environments in schools all over the United States and how policies like the
Zero Tolerance policy is creating a school to prison pipeline.
5. Synthesis of Learning: T his lecture was extremely eye-opening and very sad to listen
to. One thing that really stuck out to me was the video clip that she started her
presentation with in which it was a series of new stories that showed students all across
the country getting arrested in schools. Another part of the lecture that was particularly
eye-opening was the question and answer session. There was a parent who stood up
and shared their childs story of how her son looked at a girl at school and was
suspended and could possibly be expelled. This sounds unbelievable but it happens in
places all over the country, even our community. This presentation taught me the
importance of keeping kids in school and the negative effects of the Zero Tolerance
Policy that many schools have adopted.

1. Overview: I will attend Dr. Batchelors lecture on creativity in the English/Language Arts
classroom
2. Objectives: Standard 2 - Middle Level Curriculum - I will gain insight on how to foster
creativity in the language arts classroom. This lecture will give a lot of strategies that
have been seen as effective to allow for creativity during reading and writing instruction.
3. Description of Activities: I will actively engage and participate in Dr. Batchelors
presentation
4. Evaluation Criteria: By attending this lecture I will gain more knowledge and strategies
that will be useful in my future classroom as an English teacher.
5. Synthesis of Learning: T his lecture was extremely beneficial and I learned so much
that I will be able to use in the future. This lecture took me beyond how to implement
reading and writing into the classroom and actual strategies that foster creativity. This is
something that many classrooms do not have anymore and it is sad to see how many
students are limited in their current classrooms. I plan to be a teacher who has a very
hands-on and creative classroom and Dr. Batchelors presentation is one that I will
continue to reference as I begin my teaching career. She presented us with examples of
student work, as well, which is very beneficial.

1. Overview: I will attend monthly Kappa Delta Pi Meetings

2. Objectives: S tandard 5 - Middle Level Professional Roles - These meetings will allow
me to meet and talk with other pre-service teachers to advance leadership and service.
3. Description of Activities: I will actively engage in meetings, attend lectures, and
participate in service projects.
4. Evaluation Criteria: I will be able to apply what I have learned and experienced at these
meeting and events in my future classroom to promote leadership and service.
5. Synthesis of Learning: B y attending Kappa Delta Pi meetings I will have the
opportunity to participate in service projects and engage with other pre-service teachers.
This organization allows for people from diverse educational backgrounds to discuss and
help each other in their teaching paths. They also strive to make a difference in the
community which brings about many service opportunities for the members. A big
service project I was involved with this semester was the Holiday Basket Drive. We
adopted two schools, Rothenberg in Over-the-Rhine and Highland Elementary in
Hamilton. Everyone pitched in to bring in toiletry items, blankets and sheets, and
non-perishable foods. We then distributed these items into baskets and delivered them
to the schools. It was a great way to put a smile on some childrens faces and as a
teacher its important to remember that some students dont have everyday necessities.
This organization has helped with my leadership skills and dedication to service.

1. Overview: I will watch the movie Freedom Writers.

2. Objectives: S tandard 4 - Middle Level Instruction and Assessment - Although this movie
is a work of fiction, I think it is a great model of what some schools are like and plays out
scenarios that many teachers face and have to deal with every year.
3. Description of Activities: I will critically watch the movie, F
reedom Writers, and reflect
on the teacher practices and school set-up.
4. Evaluation Criteria: This movie allows me to see effective ways of instruction that can
be used in language arts classes.
5. Synthesis of Learning: B y watching this movie, I saw some great strategies on how to
reach students who mightve already written off school. Miss. Gruwell had a hard time
with her class at the beginning of the year but through perseverance and building
relationships with her students, she creates a classroom that becomes a family. One
strategy that I really liked from this movie was the use of a writers notebook and one
that may not always be graded. She even told the students that she wouldnt open them
if she didnt want them to. They were able to write freely and creatively which can be
very inspiring and freeing for students. This is an exercise that I plan to use in my
classroom in some form, I think it is a great form of writing that allows students to enjoy
writing.

1. Overview: I will volunteer in a split classroom.

2. Objectives: Standard 4 - M iddle Level Instruction and Assessment - Volunteering in this
classroom allowed me to work with middle aged students and get more classroom
experience.
3. Description of Activities: I will observe and actively participate in the classroom with
whatever the teachers asks me to do.
4. Evaluation Criteria: Volunteering will allow me to see another classroom and how I may
want to set up my future classroom. It also allows me to directly work with middle aged
students.
5. Synthesis of Learning: V olunteering in this classroom was very beneficial for me,
especially as a member in the UTC. This school is part of the Columbus City School
District and gave me an idea of the urban setting. I got to work with students on a lot of
reading activities. My field places have mostly been in true middle schools so being in
this class allowed me to see another age range and just how different they are. I really
enjoyed being able to work with the students in small groups while they did their weekly
word work. I was able to get to know some of them which was great. Overall, volunteer
experience is extremely helpful and I loved working in this split class.
