Instructor: Mohammad Passandideh-Fard 1395-Semester 2
Problem Set #2
Quiz #2: Monday 1395/12/23

Problem 1. Consider two long rods of

different cross sections as shown Insulation T
in the figure. The initial
temperature of the rods is uniform T 90o
at To , and two of their surfaces are
90o
insulated. The temperature of the
third surface is suddenly changed
to T . Formulate the unsteady heat
transfer problem by choosing an
appropriate coordinate system for (a) L (b) l
the rod with a cross section of (a)
triangular shape using integral
formulation and (b) quarter-circular shape using both lumped and differential formulations

Problem 2. The two bases of a truncated cone are held at constant
temperatures of T1 and T2 as shown in the figure. The lateral area R1
of the cone is insulated. Assuming T1>T2:
R2
(a) Sketch the following distributions along x direction:
x
q(x) q(x ) and T(x) along x direction.
T2
(b) Obtain a relation for the equivalent thermal resistance of the
cone. T1
(c) If the temperatures of the two bases are replaced, how will the L
rate of heat transfer change? Why? Sketch T(x) in this case.

Problem 3. Consider a long cylindrical

u
tube with a small wall thickness of
. An incompressible fluid with a
velocity V flows through the tube as
shown in the figure below. The R
outside temperature is T and the V , hi
convective heat transfer coefficients
are hi and ho in the inside and
outside of the tube, respectively. To
ho , T
There is a uniform heat generation
of u inside the tube walls. Neglecting the axial conduction in the system and assuming the fluid
temperature to be known as To at one location in the tube:
a) Formulate the radially lumped, axially distributed steady conduction through the system.
b) Obtain the temperature distribution of the system if hi ho.
c) What would be the temperature distribution if the tube was insulated on the outside?

Problem 4. The fuel element of a reactor is a solid sphere of radius u
Ro placed in an ambient with h , T . The uniform internal Ro
energy u is generated in the sphere. The centerline
temperature To is higher than an inter-phase temperature Ti at
which the fuel changes its structure from the - to the - phase.
The thermal conductivities of the two phases are different. Find
the inter-phase radius Ri which separates the -phase from the
-phase of the sphere. Ri
h , T

Problem 5. A simple heat transfer analysis of a candle may be given as

follows. The candle can be considered as a circular cylinder of radius R Tm
and initial length L sitting on an insulated surface. As the candle melts,
its length is decreased; assume the instantaneous length to be X (t ) . If
the melting temperature of the candle wax is Tm and the ambient h , T
conditions are h and T :
X (t )
R
a) State the problem formulation assuming R to be much smaller than
the candle length.
b) Find the melting rate of the candle.

Problem 6. A circular disk of small thickness and outer

radius Ro is mounted on a shaft of radius Ri. The
system is initially at the ambient temperature T .
Suddenly the shaft and disk rotate inside a stationary
sleeve with angular velocity . At the interface
between the disk and the sleeve, the interface
pressure and the coefficient of friction are P , ,
respectively. The disk exchanges heat with the
ambient by convection. Due to radial variation in the
tangential velocity, the heat transfer coefficient varies with radius according to h hi ( r / R i )2 .
Assuming no heat to be conducted to the sleeve and shaft:
a) Formulate the unsteady conduction heat transfer through the disk.
b) Obtain the steady-state temperature distribution of the disk.
