Project 2: Observational Magnified Drawing

Theme: Treasures
What object has meaning to you?
For this project, bring an object from home that has meaning to you. You will create an 3 observational
drawings of this object. The first drawing will be small value study drawing. The second is a small color study
drawing. Then, in the last drawing you will be asked to make some artistic decisions, such as choice of color
scheme, medium, and composition.Your final drawing should showcase:
Observational Drawing Techniques
Use of Viewfinder
Accurate Proportions
Range of Value from a Light Source
A Color Scheme (Complementary, Analogous, or Triadic)
Interesting Composition
Zoomed-in View
Unique Perspective

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Choose Your Subject
Bring an object from home to create your artwork. Note that you may also choose to use objects I have from
the classroom. However, you are much more likely to enjoy the project if you focus on a subject matter that is
meaningful to you. :)
Step 2: Plan Your Artwork
To successfully plan your artwork, fill out Project Proposal Worksheet PART A. You are the artist, and it is
important to make the choices artists make everyday.
Step 3: Create a Small Value Study Drawing
Use a viewfinder to draw your favorite composition from your worksheet. Be sure to build up your artwork all at
once. In other words, dont focus on one little area at a time. Once you draw the composition from observation,
trace this drawing on your second and third piece of paper. Then, begin adding value using your knowledge of
shading to show a light source.
Step 4: Create a Small Complementary Color Drawing
First, draw the same composition as in Step 3 if you have not done so. Then, choose two complementary
colors, black, and white to practice shading by creating value scales for each color. After practicing, use your
knowledge of colored pencil techniques to add color and value to your drawing.
Step 5: Create a Your Final Work of Art
After experimenting with a range of new mediums, begin planning your third and final work of art. If you are
choosing a new composition or subject matter, use a viewfinder to crop your composition and lightly draw
what you see using the drawing techniques practiced earlier. Otherwise, trace as you had in the second
artwork. Then, begin adding your chosen medium. Additionally, remember when adding color pay attention to
your light source. Where are your lightest areas? Your darkest areas?
Step 6: Turn-In Your Project
Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit
folder on Schoology. You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your slides.
