Brad Bone 3
Initial Requirements
Use off-the shelf components to construct a device for measuring
how powerful an athlete is. Transmit data to a smartphone for
storing and displaying results
Measurements include, but are not limited to:
1. How fast a person can move weight a given distance
2. How much acceleration a person can impart to a given weight
3. Compare users and track progress
4. How much jerk a person can impart to a given weight

Brad Bone 4
Research - Parameters of Interest
Athletes generally use weight training for 3 reasons, to increase
1. Muscle mass (size)
2. Strength
3. Power
Strength - How much weight a person can lift
vs.
Power - How fast a person can lift a given weight
Explosive strength training - trying to increase an athletes ability to exert
a maximal amount of force in the shortest possible time interval

Brad Bone 5
Research - Customer Surveys
Name Establishment Position/Experience

Jacobs Fitness 6 years in the NFL
All trainers agreed...
Todd Premier Health and Operations Manager: 17 years Personal A power measurement device
Del Calzo Fitness training, 11 years Management would be useful to track their clients
progress, and overall health.
Toni Poole Premier Health and MSR Supervisor/Personal trainer: 5+ years Jerk was not a significant

Research - Existing Devices
Bar Sensei is strapped to a barbell and measures
power, force, and bar speed. The device syncs wirelessly
with your smartphone to an app.

Gymaware is a small, portable, and

accurate linear encoder which attaches to
free weights bars and weight stack machines
for measuring Power output. View data on
ipad app.

House of Quality (HOQ)
Key Takeaways
Primary EC is
computation of
workout metrics
No device has
everything
A complete,
affordable workout
assistant is
essential to

satisfaction

Fiona Robertson 8
Revised Combine heart rate
Problem monitoring with power and
Statement strength metrics to create a
more complete user workout.

Fiona Robertson 9
Proof of Concept Testing
Accelerometers are electromechanical
devices used to measure acceleration
forces. Such forces may be static, like
the continuous force of gravity or, as is
the case with many mobile devices,
dynamic to sense movement or
vibrations.

InNOLEvation Challenge
The InNOLEvation Challenge is a Business Model
Competition with a focus on identifying problems and
potential solutions, building effective teams and precisely
defining the assumptions of a new venture, testing those
assumptions in the field, and then pivoting (changing)
based on the lessons learned.
