Introduction

Introduction This document contains information about the Graphical Application

Designer (GAD) version 2.44-1 and the DCS 500 libraries, install
and uninstall them.
Please take care that your directory names and file names are ac-
cording to Windows 3.11 convention, which means e.g. max. 8
characters without blanks.

During installation under Windows NT, 2000 and XP administrator

access is necessary.

What is new in ver- The new GAD version 2.44-1 is basically the same as version
sion 2.44-1 2.43-4, with following enhancements:
New drivers for Security Device, which allows running GAD
also under Windows NT4.0, 2000 and XP.
A new DCS500C compiler, which allows 16383 pins in a
design instead of 8192.
Instead of 20 symbol index attributes, new DCS500C com-
piler can now handle 30 of them (attributes 20...49 named
Index1...Index30). The ECS.INI files have attributes added.
Version number of DCS500C compiler is now 1.04.
SETUP programs are totally new.

Upgrading If you have a working GAD 2.43-x installation there is usually no

need to upgrade it to 2.44-1.
If you decide to install the new GAD, we recommend that you either
remove the old GAD or install the new GAD into directory of old
GAD, thus replacing it.
Before installing the new GAD, you should edit AUTOEXEC.BAT
and remove GAD installation directory from PATH and also the line
containing SET ECS_ROOT=C:\ABBCDTS.

Update Future updates will be available via internet.

The GAD is a PC based tool of the DC drive DCS 500B.
If there is a problem, contact your local ABB representative.

Program and Library Installation

Before starting setups Please note.

You should close all other applications before starting a
SETUP.
The default directory of GAD program installation is
C:\ABBCDTS. If that is not so, please use your actual drive and
directory names instead.
Libraries have to be installed under GAD program directory!
Installation under Windows NT / 2000 / XP requires adminis-
trator access.
Speeding up the installation under Windows 3.1x . Please see
appendix Speeding up

Starting setup from Setups can be started from CD ROM, from a temporary directory or
from disks.

CD ROM Navigate to the installation button of GAD program or desired library

(recommended) and click on the installation button.
After starting setups you may get a security warning:

Please click Yes.

temporary directory Save the desired setup (file name: SETUPEX.EXE) into a tempo-
rary directory.
Please note, all setups of program and libraries have the file name
SETUPEX.EXE, so please create different temporary directories for
different setups.

By using Windows Explorer (or File Manager) or by using Run

command of Start button browse to your temporary directory (e.g.

C:\TEMP\GAD).

Select SETUPEX.EXE and click OK; e.g. C:\TEMP\SETUPEX.EXE

disks Installation disks can be created from CD ROM. By using e.g. Win-
dows explorer you will find the contents of disks as subdirectories
of the GAD program or libraries.
GAD Program : <CD drive>:\\G2441D\144MB\disk...
Libraries : <CD drive>:\\LIB1xxD\144MB\disk
with xx for desired library version.
Copy the contents of these subdirectories to formatted and empty
disks and label each disk (e.g. G2441D disk 1 )
For installation please start the file SETUP.EXE of disk1.

Running setup During installation answer questions and follow the instructions
given by installation program.

The default directory of GAD program installation is C:\ABBCDTS.

If that is not so, please use your actual drive and directory names
instead.
Please note, libraries have to be installed under the GAD program
directory.

Installation of Sentinel For working with security device the Sentinel system driver is nec-
System Driver essary. This driver is not necessary for Windows 3.1x.
If there is already installed a Sentinel SuperPro driver (from Rain-
bow), it will also run with the GAD program.

Program and Library Installation

A setup of a Sentinel system driver, which is also installed under

GAD directory, is to be started manually. This subdirectory can be
found under GAD directory (default:
C:\ABBCDTS\Sentinel\Setup.exe). The setup can be started either
by using windows explorer or by using Run command.

After installation you will find the installed driver software in

Add/Remove Programs of Control Panel folder.

Please note: The installed driver takes effect when you restart
your computer.

An easy check of installed security device (also called dongel) is to

start the GAD program.

With Missing Security Device

- either dongel is not plugged on
parallel port
- or parallel port (LPT1) is dis-
abled, e.g. BIOS setup
- or Sentinel driver is not installed.

Environments of file The GAD installation will add environments into the file
Autoexec.bat AUTOEXEC.BAT, which are:
PATH=C:\ABBCDTS;%PATH%
SET ECS_ROOT=C:\ABBCDTS
Please note for Windows 3.1x
Please check the file Autoexec.bat, that these environments
are implemented before command WIN is executed.
Installed environments are effected after restarting the com-
puter.
Please note for Windows 95/98/ME
Installed environments are effected after restarting the com-
puter.

Program and Library Installation

Please note for Windows NT/2000/XP

The file autoexec.bat does not normally exist with these Win-
dows versions. Installed environments are effected after re-
starting the computer.
As an advanced user you can also add these environments
into Environments Variables of System Properties. After this the
file autoexec.bat can be deleted, if the file contains only these
both environments. Restarting the computer is not necessary.

Before starting GAD pro- The following is to be done before starting GAD program:
gram Plug security device on parallel port (LPT1).
Please note: The GAD program has to find the security device
during starting. Without having found security device the pro-
gram will work in demo mode, which means that no modifica-
tions can be saved.
Please note at the first time and if another library version is desi-
red:
The directory of desired DCS 500 library is to be written into
ECS.INI file by using ECS.INI Editor of the GAD program. Plea-
se see pages 9-16 up to 9-18 of GAD Manual Getting Started
for more information.

(you can also browse to directory, select program, and add /U at the
end), and click OK.

Speeding up installation Because there is a big amount of files to install, the installation can
for Windows 3.1x take quite long, unless you have the write cache of Smartdrv en-
abled.
To check, whether the write cache is enabled or not, go to DOS-
prompt and write command:
SMARTDRV /S
The column "write cache" for the drive containing the temporal di-
rectory and the installation destination drive should state Yes. If not,
write following command (assuming installation destination is
C:\ABBCDTS and temporal directory is D:\TEMP):
SMARTDRV C+ D+
Exit from DOS-prompt before starting SETUP.
If you had to change caching status, remember to restore status af-
ter you have finished installation.
Assuming the status of C-drive was changed from no caching (col-
umn read cache contained No) and D-drive was changed from
read caching (column read cache contained Yes):
SMARTDRV C- D
Warning: Do not switch power off or reset your computer while
write caching is on.

ECS.INI The ECS.INI file, which is located in subdirectory data of GAD pro-
gram, can also be modified by using an editor.

For exchanging current library modify the four lines with the direc-
tory of the library.

Please note:
The program can not handle more than ten directories, even
some of them are disabled by setting to No.
Use capital letters for directory names.
Changes are effected after restarting the GAD programs.
