University of Dundee | Dundee, United Kingdom

The Dental School is pursuing research in a variety of fields, ranging from the fundamental
sciences to epidemiology. This diversity reflects today's requirements to understand dental
conditions, the incidence of oral diseases and the provision of effective treatments. Four
Research Teams and one Dental Research Unit exist to support research in areas of strength.
Research projects leading to higher degrees are available across a broad range of dental
disciplines. Candidates register initially for a higher degree and dependent upon progress after
one year it will be confirmed as either PhD or MDSc. Dundee Dental School was given a Grade
5 rating (on a scale of 1 to 5) for its research in the 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise, the
highest grade in Scotland.

internationally excellent, with some world leading, and a very high proportion of our staff was
research active.
Main Research Interests
Oral Neurophysiology Research Team
* Human jaw reflexes and physiological factors that alter them
* Jaw muscle control in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction
* Physiological modulation of orofacial pain
Dental Materials Science and Restorative Dentistry Research Team
* Structure and its effect on properties - restorative and laboratory materials
* Application of NMR technologies to imaging at a microscopic level
* Digital terrain mapping to quantify wear and erosion of teeth and restorations
* Endodontology
Oral Public Health and Management of Oral Diseases Research Team
* Clinically based management of chronic oral diseases
* Application of novel techniques for caries detection

heredity in orofacial clefts: in particular analysis of maternal medical factors, nutrition, life style
and occupation
* Biochemical markers of nutrition for primary prevention of craniofacial anomalies
Oral Cell and Molecular Biology Research Team
* Contribution of Migration Stimulating Factor (MSF) to motogenic and angiogenic processes
with respect to action, pattern and control of gene expression and possible prognostic value
* Regulation of angiogenesis by concerted action of stimulators and inhibitors
* Intersite heterogeneity in oral mucosa with respect to regulatory molecules
