Submission Format and Layout

A short written report should explain and justify the tasks outlined in the assignment and
presented in a folder. The report should include a printed copy of all the simulation models and
figures produced using Matlab Scripts. The folder should also include an electronic copy of the
Simulink simulation models and figures submitted on a CD-ROM. You are also required to
submit a log book as defined below:

Laboratory Log Book

Maintaining a useful laboratory log book is an important skill and it is worth 7.5% of the module
mark, a log book should:

a) Be an accurate record of the work done and the results.

b) Give traceability for the work done.
c) Form the basis of any report with comments and a brief conclusion, from which any
clear, stand alone record could easily be written without having to repeat any of the work
done.
d) Be written up while you are in the laboratory, i.e., within the 3 hour session, not from bits
of paper after you have left the laboratory, this only wastes your time.

The laboratory log book sheet will be given out within the laboratory session you should
complete this and get it signed by a tutor before leaving the session. You may want to add
addition pages.
The front page should include the followings:
YOUR NAME:
MODULE CODE and TITLE
LECTURERS NAME
LABORATORY SUPERVISORS NAME

Each laboratory assignment should be headed with:

DATE on which the work has been done,
TITLE- of the assignment,
NAMES- your name and names of the people present in your sub-group for that
assignment
Laboratory sheets should be inserted, stapled in if necessary. Log book entries should be
clear, concise and legible.
It will be useful if you store your exercise models, as they can be used in this assignment.

Data Communication System Laboratory Report

Experiments

1- Prepare a formal report, the theory section should provide the answers to the following
questions:
a) Explain Measurement of information-Entropy?
b) What do you understand by Channel model & Channel capacity?
c) How analog modulations differ from digital modulation techniques?
d) What do you understand by channel coding systems? Explain its types?
e) Explain the applications where digital modulation techniques are used with the
help of diagram.
2- Write a MATLAB program to determine the free space path loss and power received by
antenna
3- Write a MATLAB code for BPSK, QPSK, & 16QAM digital modulation schemes.
4- Generate the constant-envelope PSK signal waveform for M=8, for convenience the signal
Amplitude is normal to unity

Note

You must reference all information sources using an accepted referencing convention.

Marks allocation:

Report will be assessed on the basis of following marking criteria.

Implement your solution using Matlab. A formal report should explain and justify your design
and result obtained. Reference the all information sources.

1 Objective (5 Marks)
Initiate and undertake search information related to the problem domain, evaluate it
and recommend action based on the information.
2 Theoretical details (15 Marks)
You are required to explain the concepts involved in the lab exercise(s) in detail.
3 Design of Algorithm for MATLAB Program (5 Marks)
Design the algorithm for desired output for each experiment.
4 MATLAB Program (15 Marks)
Obtain the simulation result by running the MATLAB Program and draw the plot of
desired output parameters if required and also obtain the output file.
5 Conclusions and Results (10 Marks)
Compare the simulation results with the observed and theoretical values and write
down the conclusion. You are required to make brief note on what you have done in
your work.
6 Formatting (5 Marks)
Formatting should be proper as mentioned in assignment requirement.
7 Referencing (5 Marks)
This includes the quality of references used: research papers, articles, books,
journals, trade press, etc. and the adoption of Harvard Referencing system for all
facts and diagrams used.
8 Log book (10 Marks)
You are required to maintain a log book which will be including all necessary details
of dates on which specified work has been done.
9 Demonstration (15 Marks)
A demonstration of assignment work will be shown at the time of submission of
report.

10 Viva (15 Marks)

A viva will also be conducted at the time of submission of report.
