Subject: Assessment of Chapter Editing Assignment

This editing assignment was my first real introduction to editing. I have always liked to edit
writing by my peers, so it was nice to edit an actual piece of work that could be published. Since
this was my professors writing, I needed to be direct but still understand that I am learning.
It could be very difficult to edit by myself because sometimes I wasnt sure I was making the
right edits. When I compared my edits to other students, I found that we often edited different
things. This experience taught me that different people edit in different ways and that it is
normal.
I had little experience with editing in Word, but it was easy to pick up and I feel pretty confident
now. I definitely still need to work on editing in Adobe Acrobat, but Im sure I can figure it out if
I keep practicing.
Here are a few important things I have learned about editing:
A single pass through the document with spell check can easily eradicate simple errors
It can be time consuming so breaks are necessary
Reading the text out loud can help point out structural issues
Being familiar with style can speed up the process
Inquiries to the author can prevent confusion in terms of jargon
I am looking forward to doing more editing in class. I have always been interested in editing and
publishing so this experience has been very interesting to me. I hope I will be able to learn better
tactics for editing to have a smoother process in future projects.
