The Sagamore Hills Media Center is a large open space that requires
multi-use function. The Sagamore Hills library serves 388 students in
Pre-K through grade 5 and about 50 faculty and staff members. The
space is about 2300 square feet. The library must support the concept
of a collaborative space that can support many approaches to teaching
and learning (Woolls, 2014, p. 146). This is range of activities our
library provides.
Circulation
15 desktop computer stations
Portable Promethean with projector
Teacher work area (Ellison die-cuts, paper cutter,
laminating)
Meetings and Receptions: Staff meetings, PTA Board
meetings, Kindergarten Round-Up p, Pre-K lottery, etc.
Book buddies (2 classes at a time)
Story-time and book check out grades Pre-K through 2
(once weekly)
Reading Bowl practice during lunch
Morning announcements
The library is open before school at 7:30 for book check-out (school
begins at 7:45) and after-school from 2:30-3:00 for faculty and staff.
Students need to be accompanied by a guardian during after school
hours. Food and drink are allowed in the library during Reading Bowl
practice and book club lunch meetings.

According to Woolls (2014), research on school facilities shows that

people who liked their libraries gave such reasons as attractiveness
and plenty of space (p. 147). Our library has plenty of space, but it is
my intention to make the space as attractive as possible with a new
floor plan. There are constraints, which include placement of outlets
and routers, perimeter shelving, and large conference room furniture.

Renovated Floor Plan Sagamore Hills Media Center

In the renovated floor plan for the Sagamore Hills Media Center, I will
use Flemings (2017) idea to make the most of what I have.
The Easy section will become one open space on the left of
the room. This will provide a good sightline from the
circulation desk across the entire space.
The Promethean will be relocated by the left door (door will
remained locked during school hours). This location allows
for children to use the board for Active Inspire (charts,
tables, graphs, drawing tool, etc.) during the school day.
This location also enables staff members to see the board
from the tables during meetings.
The circulation desk will move to the back of the right side
of the library. This location provides for a better vantage
point to all corners of the space. This location is also safer,
as now the desk is facing the door.
Circulation will now include self-check out and self-check in,
providing a sense of independence and ownership for
students.
Shelves behind the circulation desk will be used as a
processing area for materials (holds, repair, etc.)
Georgia book award nominees will be displayed to the left
of the door, providing an attractive book store feel.
The teacher workstation will be moved to the server room.
This can easily be done when old materials are discarded in
the server room. The teacher materials were unorganized
and dated in the prior space.
Novel sets will remain in the same space.
Reference will move to the right by the computer work
stations.
Student created art will be displayed on the upper shelves
of the 6 bookcases to provide color and a sense of
ownership for the children.

The Sagamore Hills media center provides a space for many activities
and functions for our students. As a Sagamores librarian, I will
provide a space that provides space and seating that enhances and
encourages technology use, leisure reading and browsing, and use of
materials in all formats (AASL, 2009, p. 33).
