Chapter 6

Of the Fall of Man, of Sin, and of the Punishment Thereof

1. Although God created man upright, and perfect, and gave him a righteous
law, which had been unto life had he kept it, and threatened death upon the
breach thereof;

Genesis And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou
2:16 mayest freely eat:
Genesis But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day
2:17 that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

yet he did not long abide in this honour; Satan using the subtlety of the serpent
to subdue Eve, then by her seducing Adam, who, without any compulsion, did
willlfully transgress the law of their creation, and the command given unto them,
in eating the forbidden fruit;

Genesis And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the
3:12 tree, and I did eat.
Genesis And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the
3:13 woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

II Corinthians But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so
11:3 your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

which God was pleased, according to His wise and holy counsel to permit, having
purposed to order it, to His own glory.

2. Our first parents, by this sin, fell from their original righteousness and
communion with God, and we in them, whereby death came upon all;

Romans But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by
3:21 the law and the prophets;
Romans Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all
3:22 them that believe: for there is no difference:
Romans For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
3:23
Romans Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
3:24
Romans Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his
3:25 righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Romans To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier
3:26 of him which believeth in Jesus.

all becoming dead in sin,

Romans Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death
5:12 passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Romans (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
5:13
Romans Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned
5:14 after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
Romans But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be
5:15 dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus
Christ, hath abounded unto many.
Romans And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to
5:16 condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
Romans For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive
5:17 abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus
Christ.)
Romans Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even
5:18 so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
Romans For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one
5:19 shall many be made righteous.
Romans Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded,
5:20 grace did much more abound:
Romans That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness
5:21 unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of the soul and body.

Titus Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is
1:15 nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

Genesis And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every
6:5 imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Romans What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both
3:9 Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
Romans As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
3:10
Romans There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
3:11
Romans They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none
3:12 that doeth good, no, not one.
Romans Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison
3:13 of asps is under their lips:
Romans Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
3:14
Romans Their feet are swift to shed blood:
3:15
Romans Destruction and misery are in their ways:
3:16
Romans And the way of peace have they not known:
3:17
Romans There is no fear of God before their eyes.
3:18
Romans Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the
3:19 law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before
God.

3. They being the root, and, by God's appointment, standing in the room and
stead of all mankind, the guilt of the sin was imputed, and corrupted nature
conveyed to all their posterity, descending from them by ordinary generation,

I Corinthians For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
15:21
I Corinthians For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
15:22

I Corinthians And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam
15:45 was made a quickening spirit.

I Corinthians And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the
15:49 heavenly.

and by nature children of wrath,

Ephesians And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins:
2:1
Ephesians Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to
2:2 the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of
disobedience:
Ephesians Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh,
2:3 fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of
wrath, even as others.

the servants of sin, the subjects of death,

Romans 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

Romans Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death
5:12 passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

and all other miseries, spiritual, temporal and eternal, unless the Lord Jesus set
them free.

Hebrews Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself
2:14 likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the
power of death, that is, the devil;
Hebrews And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
2:15

I Thessalonians For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you,
1:9 and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
I Thessalonians And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even
1:10 Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

4. From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled,

and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil,

Romans Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God,
8:7 neither indeed can be.

Colossians And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works,
1:21 yet now hath he reconciled
Colossians In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and
1:22 unreproveable in his sight:
Colossians If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the
1:23 hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature
which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
Colossians Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the
1:24 afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

Colossians Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that
1:28 we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

do proceed all actual transgressions.

James But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
1:14
James Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished,
1:15 bringeth forth death.

Matthew For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts,
15:19 false witness, blasphemies:
Matthew These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth
15:20 not a man.

5. The corruption of nature, during this life, doth remain in those that are
regenerated;

Romans For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is
7:18 present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

Romans For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
7:22
Romans But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and
7:23 bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

Ecclesiastes For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
7:20
I John If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1:8
I John If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us
1:9 from all unrighteousness.

and although it be through Christ pardoned, and mortified, yet both itself, and
the first motions thereof, are truly and properly sin.

Romans For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
7:22
Romans But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and
7:23 bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
Romans O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
7:24
Romans I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the
7:25 law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Galatians For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are
5:17 contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
