Write the definition of nationalism on the following lines:

For the following scenarios, determine if they are an example of nationalism or not.
Then write 1-2 sentences explaining how the information from the scenario helped
you reach your decision.

1. In his inauguration address, President Trump repeated his campaign promise that
he would put America first. Like many Americans, Trumps supporters are proud
to live in the United States and want to keep the country safe and prosperous.
Trump believes that America can be the greatest country in the world, and should
try to reach this goal by following policies that benefit it even if they hurt other
groups. Some of the policies Trump believes will protect Americas greatness
include tightening border security and not entering into broad trade agreements.

2. On August 26, 1920, American women gained the right to vote through the
ratification of the 19th Amendment. Some opposed this decision, but many other
Americans were excited. Many American women in particular felt more connected
to their country and were proud to begin voting in elections. The 19th Amendment
continues to protect American womens right to vote and the group has played a
significant role in elections for the last 97 years.

3. Many Canadians are proud of their country and enjoy living it. They want their
country to be successful, and so have agreed to enter into various trade agreements
and political alliances. These agreements help both Canada and the other countries
involved grow their economy and feel secure.

4. Beginning roughly in the 1700s and lasting into the mid-1900s, Great Britain
controlled 24% of the world. The British believed their culture was better than the
cultures of other lands and used violence to increase the size of their empire. The
British were very proud of both their home country and the empire they created.

5. From the 1940s until 1991, the Soviet Union (USSR), a state in what we know as
Russia, was incredibly powerful. The USSR often punished people the government
believed hurt the state, but many Russians remained proud of the country and its
global power. The USSR tried to increase its influence by taking over governments in
eastern and central Europe as well as by supporting allies in areas like Cuba.
