Abstract

The Badgett-Kritsonis Strategic Leadership Model (BK-SLM; 2016) focuses on six fundamental
principles of effective supervision. The model emphasizes reasonable expectations that are
clearly communicated and consistently enforced. Results are monitored and evaluated for
effectiveness. Finally, expectations are systematically reinforced or revised. The model is
applicable to many facets of education, business, and industry.

Effective organizational leadership is by design. We believe organizations governed with

clear roles, responsibilities, and goals are destined to succeed because of a coherent message,
purpose, and process. Leaders can more effectively facilitate success for an organization by
articulating a supervision leadership model for how organizational members interact with one
another pertaining to their specific responsibilities. This includes supervising them so they
achieve expectations that are vital to the organizations mission and vision. Schools can be
viewed as micro organizations that are run by macro organizations called districts. The Badgett-
Kritsonis Strategic Leadership Model (BK-SLM; 2014) can be effectively used at all levels and
areas of education.
We have identified several key principles that support the effective coordination and
implementation of human, fiscal, and material resources. These principles outline the Badgett-
Kritsonis Strategic Leadership Model (BK-SLM; 2014).
1. Reasonable
Expectations

6. Reinforced 2. Clearly
or Revised Communicated

3. Consistently
5. Evaluated
Enforced

4. Monitored

Badgett-Kritsonis Strategic Leadership Model (BK-SLM)

The Badgett-Kritsonis Strategic Leadership Model (BK-SLM; 2014) focuses on six

fundamental principles of effective supervision. Step One: Expectations must be reasonable. Step
Two: Expectations clearly communicated. Step Three: Expectations consistently enforced. Once
these foundational steps are established, the supervisor advances to the fourth, fifth, and sixth
steps. Step Four: Results monitored. Step Five: Results evaluated for effectiveness. Step Six:
Expectations reinforced or revised in a systematic, measured, and safe manner. This model is
grounded on effective decision making.
