Essential Question:
How does modifying and rethinking one of Monets works in 3D space
keep the original integrity of the piece intact.

Objectives:
1. Students will learn about Monet and the Impressionist art movement.
2. Students will practice techniques with scissors, glue, and paper.
3. Students will create their own water lily in 3D space.

Time Allotment:
2 consecutive classes of 40 minutes

Materials Needed:
Construction paper, scissors, glue, paper plates, oil pastels

1) Anticipatory Set: (Pre-activities/Prerequisites)

Conduct/ Behavior Expectations

Students are expected to listen quietly in their seats and
efficiently work on projects. When prompted they should pay
attention to the lesson. When finished with a project they should
free draw or read a book.
If students become overly rowdy they will be asked to sit out of
the lesson individually or given silent art as a group.

Learning Expectations:
For students to work step by step to create their own water lilies
in the style of Monets impressionism.

Transfer (Past Learning/Previous lesson)

This lesson relates to a previous learning about famous artists
and artistic movements.
The students will learn about Monets Water Lilies to fulfill art
history requirements and practice work with scissors and paper
art to create mixed media compositions.

Purpose (Importance/Relevance)

I am teaching this lesson so the students will better understand

Monet, his Water Lily paintings, and paper art.
Creation is the highest level of Blooms Taxonomy and the
students are creating water lilies out of paper. They have specific
objectives to meet and need to understand the Impressionist
movement and Monet.

Technology:
Power Point- to introduce lesson

Format
I plan to switch between lecture and demonstration to teach the
students in a wide variety of ways. The students will be read a
story about the artist, learn about the artist and movement, and
complete the project step by step with the instructor.
Motivation/Hook:
I will read the students a childrens book about Monets works to
start the lesson. This will put the artists works in a familiar
context that will make it more approachable.

2) Instructional Input: (10 minutes)

a) Explicit Instruction:
Step by step what the teacher and students will do during the
lesson.

Teacher
1. Read Katie and the Waterlily Pond
2. Go over PowerPoint
3. Create flowers step by step
4. Color plate with more lilies

Students
1. Listen to the story
2. Listen to the PowerPoint
3. Fold pink paper 4 times
4. Draw petal shape
5. Cut out
6. Roll on pencil
7. Glue down on card
8. Cut lily pad
9. Color plate
10. Glue all down

Instructional Strategies
1. Targeted Feedback
2. Discovery Learning
3. Analysis of Student Work

b) Guided Instruction (-15 minutes)

Read Katie and the Waterlily Pond to the students and ask questions
throughout. Go over Monet, Impressionism and the Waterlily series in
the PowerPoint.

c) Demonstration: (20 minutes)

Do a step by step demonstration for making the flowers. Give
students a piece of pink paper each, fold it 4 times hamburger style.
Draw a football shape and cut it out. Roll all the petals on a pencil.
Glue them down in cross shapes on a white square. 3 layers of
petals. Cut a lily pad shape and glue flower to it. Decorate plate with
a pond. Glue pad on top.

d) Higher Level Questions: List 2-3 higher level questions you plan
to ask during the lesson
1. Describe what you see in Monets Waterlilies that made them
such a strong subject for the artist
2. Interpret what you think Monet saw in his garden that made
him paint for 30 years.

e) Closure:
I will wrap up the lesson by reviewing the PowerPoint, restating
the projects objectives, and continuation of this project the
following week.

f) Extends Learning:
I will review the terms and techniques throughout class time and
as I introduce other lessons that have similar media.

g) Assessment:
Observation-Can the student use the elements of art/principals of
design to create an aesthetically pleasing design?

Conversation--Can the student recognize that art works are

sometimes created with a specific purpose in mind? Can the
student identify the elements of art/principals of design in nature
and in art?

Differentiation
IEP: Provide a copy of the PowerPoint and monitor the students progress,
offering assistance if needed.
ESOL: Monitor student to ensure understanding and further explain the
material and demonstrate if necessary.
Different Rate of Learning:
Faster Students- I will entice them to slow down the process first and
when finished allow them to practice with drawing books.
Slower Students- I will provide extra assistance in the classroom and
give them extra time in following classes to finish.

Learning Styles: I will meet many different learning styles by varied

instruction, demonstration, and exercises before projects. Students spend
most of class time on independent exploration of the materials and
methods.
