Research
It is important that you do your own research prior to submitting an application for a
scholarship. Consider your specific area of expertise when researching a course and
ensure you satisfy the pre-requisites (admission requirements) of the institution where you
are planning to study. When researching an appropriate course and institution, consider the
location of the institutions, environment and the cost of living in the state or area where that
institution is located, as this will have an impact on your study if you are awarded a
scholarship.

National Planning and Monitoring, the National Training Council, and members of the
business community.
Only applications that have progressed for further assessment will be interviewed. The

study area to the development of PNG. The interview will be accompanied by an IELTS and
STAT to assess the applicants academic English language proficiency.

/ 17
Selection Process

Notification of Selection Result

Notification of selection results will be communicated to all applicants via email. All
applicants will be advised whether or not they have been selected for an interview. All
interviewed applicants will be notified whether or not they have been Awarded an Australia
Awards Scholarships. The result is final. Where appropriate, notification will include details
of pre-departure briefing (Basic Computer Training, academic skills, cultural preparation).
This training is compulsory and requires full-time attendance for the duration.

Interviews
All highly assessed scholarship applicants will be shortlisted and required to attend an
interview and relevant tests. Interviews for Undergraduate and Masters by coursework
applicants may be conducted in small groups. Masters by Research and Doctoral
applicants attend individual interviews. Australia Awards - PNG arranges necessary
academic tests to coincide with interviews. Further information will be provided to selected
applicants at that stage of the selection process through the email address provided on the
application form.

English Language Proficiency

An increasing number of Australian institutions require an academic English language test
score for international students. Applicants whose applications have progressed for further
assessment will be required to complete an English language test unless they have
successfully completed a test in the past two years.
There are three acceptable tests: IELTS, TOEFL and PTE. Scholarship applicants are
strongly encouraged to assess their academic English language levels and to be prepared
for the test before applying for a scholarship. You can download free information about the
tests and try the free sample questions at www.ielts.org/ or www.toefl.org/. You can also
order practice materials on the websites. The tests assess Listening, Reading, Writing and
Speaking. To be offered a place in an institution you need to be very competent in all of
these areas. If you are not competent in all areas, you should take the time to develop your
English skills before applying for a scholarship. It is worthwhile in your course research to
look at entry requirements such as IELTS requirements so that you can realistically assess
your academic English proficiency by attempting the practice questions on the IELTS
website.

Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT)

The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is used by many tertiary institutions in
Australia as part of their admissions procedure for special categories of applicants to
tertiary study. All shortlisted candidates are required to sit for a STAT (arranged by Australia
Awards PNG) to assess their academic levels. The STAT results further assist in the
placement process. Applicants are encouraged to visit the STAT website at
http://www.uac.edu.au/stat/ to get more information.
The following conditions apply to both Provisional and Reserve Australia Awards

Pre Departure Briefing
The Pre-Departure Briefing (PDB) is compulsory for all Australia Awards Scholarship
recipients and varies in length from 1 week to 2 weeks (depending upon the need for a
candidate to undertake Basic Computer Training). PDB is conducted in Port Moresby. PDB
provides essential information that recipients need when they arrive in Australia to
commence their studies, such as advice about living and studying in Australia. The briefing
prepares Award recipients to settle into Australia and their institution quickly, making it
easier for them to complete their studies within the timeframe provided in their contract. The
briefings are also an opportunity to provide information about Award conditions, including
entitlements and obligations, such as the requirement that Awardees leave Australia and
return to their home country for a minimum of double the duration of the study in Australia.
Australia Awards PNG will meet the travel, accommodation and meal allowance cost for
provincially based candidates travelling in to attend the PDB.

Scholarship Requirements
Prior to travelling to Australia, scholarship recipients must:
receive an Australia Awards Scholarship contract from the Australian Government;
meet Australian immigration requirements for a student visa;
be medically fit to commence studies in Australia; and,
not have any criminal convictions or civil cases pending in Court.

In Australia, scholarship recipients must:

abide by the conditions of the scholarship and the rules of Australian tertiary institutions;
abide by the rules and regulations governing a student visa;
act in a way that will not bring disrepute Australia Awards, the Australian Institution or
PNG; and,
return to PNG for double the length of their time in Australia (i.e. four years if the
Australian study took two years). If during the two years travel exclusion period, the
scholarship recipient returns to live in Australia, a debt to the Commonwealth may be
activated OR any time spent in Australia may be added to the two-year exclusion period.
Calculation of the two years exclusion period starts when the scholarships recipients
arrive in PNG, not the visa expiry date.

Immigration and Visas

Australian Student Visas

Entry to and residence in Australia is controlled by the Australian Department of
Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). Australia Awards PNG will assist successful
Australia Awards Scholarships recipients with the visa application process; however, it is
necessary to ensure that candidates visit the DIBP website to source more information on
the law and regulations that govern the immigration and visa process.

Family Entry
Recipients can bring their immediate families to Australia at their own cost, and upon
meeting Australia Awards and immigration requirements. Further information on
requirements of Dependant Visas and family entry information can be sourced from the
DIBP website: www.immi.gov.au/ or through the Australia Visa Application Centre (AVAC)
website: www.ttsaustralia.com/ .
Dependents include your spouse or partner and natural or legally (National Court) adopted
children. It does not include Mother, Father, Brother, Sister, Uncle, Aunt, Cousin, etc. Your
children aged over 18 years at time of application will not be permitted to travel to Australia
as Students Dependent.
Families are recommended to delay joining the awardee for the first six months of the
awardee's time in Australia. This is to enable awardee to settle into the accommodation,
study, acclimatise, become familiar with their surroundings, and adjust to the Australian
tertiary institution environment.
Additionally, recipients need to consider that planning for family entry will involve securing
suitable accommodation; school enrolment; child-care enrolment; and managing family
expectations. The responsibility of having your family join you in Australia is yours. There
will be additional expenses like family insurance cover; medical and travel expenses,
wellbeing and livelihood for the duration of their study in Australia.

For indicative Estimates on the Proof of funds required by DIBP refer to Table 1.

Living and Learning in Australia

The only country that is also a continent, Australia is situated in the Southern Hemisphere
in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Nearest neighbors to the north are Papua New Guinea and
Indonesia. New Zealand lies to the east, about a three-hour flight away. Almost one in four
Australians were born overseas. You will meet people from all corners of the globe who
have settled in Australia from Europe and Asia, to Africa, the Middle East and the
Americas.

Reintegration and networking

PNG Australia Alumni Association (PNGAAA)

The PNG Australia Alumni Association (PNG-AAA) was established following a
unanimous decision of almost 250 delegates to the 2006 Inaugural Alumni Conference held
in Port Moresby. Membership of the Association is open to any Papua New Guinean who
has studied at or through an Australian educational institution either privately funded or
under a sponsored program. Australia considers its relationship with PNG to be one of its
deepest and most enduring. It is strong on many levels, including the peopletopeople links
formed by the large number of Papua New Guineans who have studied in Australia. The
Association strengthens the links between the two countries and gives graduates a forum to
contribute to debate about PNG's future and ways in which both countries can benefit from
a continuing relationship.
On completion of studies, returning awardees will be eligible for membership of the Papua
New Guinea Australia Alumni Association (PNGAAA). This Association is important for
professional development, mentoring, networking and making contacts and introductions if
you are going to be searching for a job when you return to PNG.
As a member of an alumni association you should be committed to participate in community
projects and to demonstrate leadership by taking charge of voluntary activities to benefit the
community.
Members of alumni association may make an appointment for access to office, copying,
telephone, email and internet facilities at the Australia Awards-PNG Information Centre
located at Port Tower, Hunter Street, Port Moresby.
Many Papua New Guineans have studied in Australia, both before and after Independence,
and since 1999 well over 1,000 Papua New Guineans have been awarded Australia
Awards Scholarships or similar scholarships.
For membership forms and other information on the PNG-AAA email
secretariat@pngaa.com or pdi@australiaawardspng.org.
Alumni membership fees for graduates returning in the first year is paid for by the Australia
Awards PNG office.

Reintegration and tracking of awardees

As part of your application for a scholarship award, all applicants will need to provide
information on how their study will contribute to Papua New Guineas development
priorities. It is expected that awardees coming home to PNG will provide a return on the
scholarship investment by applying the learnings from their study to organisation or service
improvements for their employer or by contributing to their community.
Prior to departure on award, all successful scholarship recipients will prepare an interim
reintegration plan that will guide their study and be a foundation plan for their return to PNG.
Reintegration Plans will be monitored to ensure they are being implemented. Awardees
returning to PNG must provide information for analysis of scholarship impacts by
participating in data collection and survey work over a period of two years to track the
experiences of awardees. Awardees returning to PNG are expected to commit to applying
their new skills at work or to commit to finding work to apply their new skills. Tracking will
commence just prior to the return to PNG and also at 12 months and 24 months after
return.
