Weliveinatimeofstruggle.Thingshappenfastandoneeventquicklyfollowsanother.Thisleadstoan
imbalance,impairspeoplesjudgementandcloudstheirvision.Peopleareindireneedofsomequiettimein
whichtostopandreflect.TheymaythenattainamomentoftruthfulnessandAllahwillinturnblesshimwith
someinsight.

Awayfromthenoiseandthedisputes,someonewhoreflectswillfindthatthecalamitiesoftheArabworld
canbeattributedtothreediseases.

1.Sectarianism(Forexample:SunniversusShia,ChristianversusMuslim)

TherootsofthisdiseaselieinwhatourtheProphetMuhammadcalled:Thediseaseofnations.Hesaid:
Thediseaseofpreviousnationshascreptupuponyou:envyandhatred.Truly,hatredisarazor:itshaves
awaynotapersonshair,buttheirreligion.

Theremedyliesinspreadingpeaceandlove,asmentionedattheendofthesamehadith:IswearbytheOne
inWhosehandmysoullies,youwillnotenterParadiseuntilyoubelieve,andyouwillnotbelieveuntilyou
loveoneanother.ShallInotinformyouofsomethingwhichenablesyoutoattainthis?Spreadpeaceamong

2.Racism(ArabversusPersian,KurdversusTurk,whiteversusblack)

TherootsofthisdiseaselieinwhattheProphetcalled:TherallyingcryoftheAgeofIgnorance.A
disputetookplacebetweensomeoftheEmigrants(Muhajirun)andtheHelpers(Ansar)andeachsidecalled
forsupportfromtheirrespectivegroup.AnotherdisputetookplacebetweenmemberstheAwsandthe
Khazraj,thetwotribeswhichmadeuptheHelpersandeachsidecalledforsupportfromtheirrespective
tribe.TheProphetsaid:IsthistherallyingcryoftheAgeofIgnorancewhileIamamongstyou?Leave
this,foritisrepulsive!(Bukhari)

AbuDharr(mayAllahbepleasedwithhim)said:Ioncetradedinsultswithaman.Iinsultedhimby
mentioninghismother,whowasnotanArab.HecomplainedaboutthistotheMessengerofAllah.Hesaid
:OAbuDharr,youaresomeonewhostillpossessessomeofthequalitiesoftheAgeofIgnorance!

binRabah.HismothersnamewasHamamahandshewasNubian.

TheremedyisinmakingGodconsciousness(taqwa)thecriterioninjudgingapersonsmerit.TheProphet

3.Therelentlesspursuitofworldlythings(i.e.wealth,power,dominanceoverothers)

TherootsofthislieinwhatourMastercalledfeebleness(wahn).Hesaid:Allahwillsurelycastfeebleness
intoyourhearts.Someoneasked:Whatisfeebleness?Loveofworldlythingsandhatredofdeath,he
replied.(Grading:sahib.FoundinAbuDawud)

TheProphetalsosaid:ThismaterialworldissweetandlushandAllahisplacingyouinittoseehowyou
act.Sobewareofthematerialworld.(Muslim)

TheProphetsaid:IswearbyAllahthatIdonotfearthatyouwillcommitpolytheismafterIhavegone.I
fearratherthatyouwillcompeteoverit[thematerialworld].(Bukhari)

TheProphetalsosaid:IswearbyAllahthatIdonotfearpovertyforyou.Ifearratherthatthematerial
worldwillbeopeneduptoyouasitwasopeneduptothosebeforeyouandthatyoucompeteoveritasthey
competedoveritanditdestroysyouasitdestroyedthem.(Bukhari,Muslim)

TheProphetMuhammadwarnedusaboutwhatthesesicknesseswillleadto:

1.Tribulations

TheProphetsaid:Rushtoperformgoodworksbeforetribulationscomelikepartofadarknight.Aman
willbeabelieverinthemorningandbecomeadisbelieverbytheeveningorhewillbeabelieverinthe
eveningandwillbecomeadisbelieverbythemorning.Hewillsellhisreligionforsomesmallworldlygain.

2.Widespreadkilling

TheProphetsaid:IswearbytheOneinWhosehandmysoullies,theworldwillnotendbeforepeople
experienceatimeinwhichthekillerwillnotknowwhyhekilledandthepersonkilledwillnotknowwhyhe
waskilled.Someoneasked:Howwillthatbe?Hesaid:Therewillbekilling:boththekillerandtheperson
killedwillendupintheFire.(Muslim)

TheProphetsaid:Justbeforethelasthourtherewillbekilling.Youwillnotbekillingpolytheistsbut
ratheryouwillbekillingeachother,tothepointwhereamanwillkillhisneighbour,hisbrother,hisuncleor
hiscousin.Thecompanionsasked:Willwestillpossessourintellectsatthattime?Hesaid:Theintellects
ofthepeopleofthattimewillberemoved.Allthatwillremainwillbethedregsofsociety.Mostofthemwill
believethattheyarefightingforacausebutinrealityhavenocause[tofightfor].(Grading:sahih,in
Ahmad,IbnHibban,IbnAbiShayba)

3.ConspiringofOthersagainstMuslims

TheProphetsaid:Othernationswillsoonsummononeanothertoattackyoujustaspeopleinviteothers
tosharetheirdish.Someoneasked:Willthatbebecauseofoursmallnumbersatthattime?Hereplied:
No,youwillbenumerousatthattime,butyouwillbelikeparticlesofwastethatareseenuponatorrent.
Allahwillremovefearofyoufromtheheartsofyourenemyandcastfeeblenessintoyourhearts.Someone
asked:Whatisfeebleness,OMessengerofAllah?Loveofworldlythingsandhatredofdeath,hereplied.

Analysis

TheProphetMuhammadinformedusthattherootsofthesecalamitieslieindiseasesinthesoulsof
individuals.Thesevereconsequencesofthesediseasesarelikebrancheswhichspringforthfromtheseroots.
MayAllahcuretheUmmahofthesediseases.

AllahHimselfalludestothisintheQuraninSuratalShams.Firstly,Heswearsbythingswhichhavean
effectuponourcosmos:thesun,themoon,theday,thenight,theheavensandtheearth,thenHeswearsby
thehumansoulasiftosaythatthistooisoneoftheforcesthathasaninfluenceinourlives.Intheresponse
totheseoathssuccessandfailurearemadedependentuponhowmandealswithhisownsoul.Allahsays:
Trulyhewhopurifiesit,succeeds,andhewhocorruptsit,fails.

TheQuranicremedyandsolutiontothesecalamitiesispurificationofthesoul.Whatweneedtodayisthe
couragetoconfrontthisreality.Wemustnotallowourlowerselveswhichcommandustocommitevilto
makelightofthisreality.Wemustnotletourselvesfleefromconfrontingitunderthepretextofbeingtoo
preoccupiedwithsolvingtheseeminglygreaterproblemsoftheummah.

MayAllahimplanttaqwainoursoulsandpurifythem;HeisthebestabletopurifythemandHeisthesouls
GuardianandMaster,thePossessorofMajestyandGenerosity
