Only recently, the OPCW gained worldwide fame after winning the
Nobel Peace Prize in 2013 for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical
weapons. In 2011, to ensure the future viability of the Chemical Weapons
Convention (CWC) and continued compliance with its prohibitions on the
hostile use of toxic chemicals, the Scientific Advisory Board of the OPCW
advised that greater awareness was a necessity, particularly among key
audiences such as chemists and those studying to become chemists.
Consequently, high school educational materials on chemical weapons, Fiona Clark, DP

International Conference on Chemistry Education in Toronto, Canada, in
July, We have produced materials that supply content for up to 12 lessons.
Topics range from the synthesis and detection of common chemical
weapons to ethical debates on the supply of dual use chemicals, to
countries with unstable or hostile regimes. They also describe various ways
that teachers can implement Chemistry in Conflict in their curriculum.
Daniel Feakes, Strategy and Policy Adviser, Office of Strategy and Policy

teaching experience at the school.
Q: Describe the key challenges and milestones you have faced as an IB teacher.
I joined the school in 2009 and was fully involved in the IB authorization process. The major
challenges and milestones I faced, along with the countrys economic situation, were:
1. Languageour staff had limited English language skills and we had to translate a lot
of documents. However, the school is now a member of the Association of IB Schools of
Commonwealth Independent States (CIS) and has access to documents in Russian.
2. Teacher training and educationwe worked hard to introduce teachers to the IB philosophy
and standards, emphasizing the student-centred approach in teaching. We had to:
address differentiation in the classroom
engage new perspectives on the planning-teaching-assessment cycle
consider reflection as part of teaching and learning.
3. Introducing the IB within the school communityit required great effort to work
with the teachers and the parents to implement the programmes. However, engaging
them in the process from the very beginning contributed to the overall success of the
programme implementation.
Q: How do you use resources from the surrounding community in your teaching?
We invite guest speakers from
other institutions to enhance and
broaden student learning. We
also expose students to exciting
new activities and environments.
For example, the first TOK class
took place in an observatory to
demonstrate how things look
different depending on the
distance between us and them. How can students connect this with knowledge? Should
they only look for facts that are closer and easier to grasp, or go deeper and discover the
roots of phenomena? Should they use a microscope approach throughout their learning
experience? What would that microscope be in different situations?

The event featured an impressive line-up of speakers from around the globe. Discussions
included timely and important topics such as key research on the impact of IB
programmes, the shifting landscape of higher education in Asia, and how societal changes
impact the purpose and delivery of education. There was also a school/university fair.
Thank you to all participants and the IBs partners at The University of Hong Kong for making
the event a great success. The next Symposium will be held in October 2015 in the Netherlands.
We thank everyone at the North India network for distributing information and their
support of the event. We are very grateful for the local hospitality and guidance in
organizing host venues and all associated logistics. We look forward to seeing continued
development throughout the network.Ashish Trivedi, Regional School Services Manager

I tackled many obstacles in order to achieve my goal of setting up the library and initiated
a reading club at KGBV as my starting point. After that, I raised funds through baking and
selling cakes, bought books, collected book donations and created reading levels for the
books I had collected. I also proposed which room to use as a library at KGBV and sorted
out electricity and hygiene issues.
When the library was set up, I tested it by monitoring the improvements of the students of
KGBV in reading and understanding English.
During this eight-month journey, I found myself reflecting and using so many of the skills
I had learned in the MYP. There was a lot of inquiring, thinking, communicating, analyzing
and presenting involved during this beautiful journey.

in such high regard and that President Correa, the
Minister of Education and others have selected the IB as a significant education reform measure to
improve the quality of education for all Ecuadorians. Not only do we recognize the achievement
of the schools as they become authorized, we also congratulate their outstanding and dedicated
educators who made this achievement possible. Id like to thank every teacher, administrator and
workshop leader who has contributed to bringing an IB education to students across Ecuador. I am
confident that the hard work that it took to reach this point will be worth it.
Their community and service work gives students the space to apply their new marketing
knowledge to the benefit of the nearby shanty town market sellers in the project Accompanying
Entrepreneurs. During the project, they carry out a promotional campaign to sell nutritional
cookies that are specially prepared for both the battle against and prevention of infant malnutrition.
By means of the reflection component, we can evaluate the ethical implications of marketing,
raising questions concerning the importance of truth and objectivity amongst other key principles.
Approaches to teaching and learning encourages critical, creative and lateral thinking skills
that are valued for todays professions. Students set personal goals that in turn develop
through language development in both English and Spanish. By improving oratory and
persuasive skills, with the preparation of high impact presentations, students learn to share
more effectively with students of other nationalities.
Through our permanent process of collaborative reflection, we analyse the IB norms and
standards and our methodologies at the heart of our educational model, assessing the impact
of our education in both the corporate and the real worlds. Going from the transdisciplinary
approach of the PYP to the disciplinary focus of the DP, our students now find a new
challenge: the integration of the specializations demanded by the DP courses with the CPs
transdisciplinary skills and competencies through exploration set within a real work context.
