GLOBAL NEWS
The action element of Creativity, Action, Service has been renamed
The action element of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) in the Diploma Programme (DP) will be
re-named activity from January 2015. This change is being made to ensure consistency in the
way the word action is used across the IB programmes. To explain this:
In the Primary Years Programme, students may take action as a result of something they
have learned. For example, if they studied water conservation, they might take action by
advising their siblings not to waste water.
In the Middle Years Programme, action is learning by doing and experiencing. Through
responsible action, tightly connected with sustained inquiry and critical reflection,
students can develop the attributes described by the learner profile.
However, in the Diploma Programme, action refers to doing a physical activity that leads
to good health. This is quite a different meaning. Consequently, the IB decided to change
action in CAS to activity. The word activity means just that, a physical activity.
All IB materials will be updated over a transitional period to reflect the name change to
Creativity, Activity, Service. No other change has been made to CAS.

What is international-mindedness?
International-mindedness is central to the IB mission and a founding principle of IB
educational philosophy. How do students, teachers, and leaders in IB communities view the
concept of international-mindedness?

Dr Saud Al Ammari, Legal Counseland Member of the Board of Trustees, King

Fahad Academy, London, EnglandInternational-mindedness is the key to
having a better understanding and appreciation of one another. In fact, in
todays troubled world, international-mindedness is perhaps the way for a
brighter and more peaceful future. Our young men and women are the hope
for a better world, and I am pleased to see the IB championing this trustworthy cause to
enable them to achieve such a noble objective.

Kevin Kahiro Maina, IB student, The Aga Khan Academy,

Nairobi International-mindedness is best defined as a frame
of mind. Perhaps though, a philosophy for living would be more
appropriate for it enables and empowers individuals with the
ability to perceive the world in a manner that disregards the self
and its prejudices while embracing a greater sense of the other.

IB Open World Schools pilot shows growth

The IB Open World Schools pilot project launched in 2012explores how an authentic IB
Diploma Programme (DP) experience can be extended to students who would otherwise be
unable to access an IB education. By digitally linking with an IB World School, students gain
the opportunity to undertake a two-year DP course online.

During the pilots third enrolment cycle in September, the

existing four students were joined by a further 31, bringing
the total to 35 students. These students come from 12
schools not offering IB programmes that have digitally
linked with 4 of the 7 IB Open World Schools around the
world. Each of the new students has chosen to study one
or two DP courses online to complement their existing
curriculums. The pilot also now includes a small number of
independent students, and the IB is conducting a case study
on how this student segment can be served better.

OPCW collaborates with the IB on new chemistry resources

A recent collaboration between the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons
(OPCW), Leiden University, teachers from Dutch high schools and the IB has lead to
the production of a range of free teacher and student materials that raise awareness of
chemical weapons and ethics in chemistry. The project was funded by the municipality of

Only recently, the OPCW gained worldwide fame after winning the

weapons. In 2011, to ensure the future viability of the Chemical Weapons

audiences such as chemists and those studying to become chemists.

Tatevik Nalbandyan, the schools Head of Extra Curricula Department, talks about her
teaching experience at the school.

Q: Describe the key challenges and milestones you have faced as an IB teacher.
I joined the school in 2009 and was fully involved in the IB authorization process. The major
challenges and milestones I faced, along with the countrys economic situation, were:
1. Languageour staff had limited English language skills and we had to translate a lot
of documents. However, the school is now a member of the Association of IB Schools of
Commonwealth Independent States (CIS) and has access to documents in Russian.
2. Teacher training and educationwe worked hard to introduce teachers to the IB philosophy
and standards, emphasizing the student-centred approach in teaching. We had to:
address differentiation in the classroom
engage new perspectives on the planning-teaching-assessment cycle
consider reflection as part of teaching and learning.
3. Introducing the IB within the school communityit required great effort to work
with the teachers and the parents to implement the programmes. However, engaging
them in the process from the very beginning contributed to the overall success of the
programme implementation.

Q: How do you use resources from the surrounding community in your teaching?
We invite guest speakers from
other institutions to enhance and
broaden student learning. We
also expose students to exciting
new activities and environments.
For example, the first TOK class
took place in an observatory to
demonstrate how things look
different depending on the
distance between us and them. How can students connect this with knowledge? Should
they only look for facts that are closer and easier to grasp, or go deeper and discover the
roots of phenomena? Should they use a microscope approach throughout their learning
experience? What would that microscope be in different situations?

International Baccalaureate Organization 2014

AFRICA/EUROPE/MIDDLE EAST
Q: How does the IB curriculum benefit your students in their interactions within the
larger community around them?
The opportunity to share and learn through networkingfor teachers, students and
administratorscreates both a deeper understanding of local cultural aspects and improved
awareness of global issues. Students are more sensitive to others and also to global issues.
Additionally, the delivery of a curriculum with such a focus on conceptual learning and
understanding leads to the development of higher order thinking skills.

Q: What are your future ambitions in teaching the IB curriculum?

Its all about our students learning. My ambitions are to help the students to achieve their
highest potential, and I have to use my creativity, knowledge, and skills to be able to do so.
With rapid changes in all the global aspects that we are witnessing since the beginning of
the 21st century, we teachers should not follow but try to keep ahead.

Khushboos MYP personal project, believing that
her story is a reflection of what the IB strives to
achieve. Khushboo tells us about her project.

For my MYP personal project in 2013, I wanted

to establish a library at a girls government
school called Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya
(KGBV) inHyderabad. I chose the project for
this particular school following some service Khushboo Khoja and students at the Kasturba
activitiesthat I had previously completed Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Hyderabad, India.
thereI had helped the girls in learning
English and mathematics, and it provoked me to take a bigger step in contributing to their
learning.

I tackled many obstacles in order to achieve my goal of setting up the library and initiated
a reading club at KGBV as my starting point. After that, I raised funds through baking and
selling cakes, bought books, collected book donations and created reading levels for the
books I had collected. I also proposed which room to use as a library at KGBV and sorted
out electricity and hygiene issues.

When the library was set up, I tested it by monitoring the improvements of the students of
KGBV in reading and understanding English.

During this eight-month journey, I found myself reflecting and using so many of the skills
I had learned in the MYP. There was a lot of inquiring, thinking, communicating, analyzing
and presenting involved during this beautiful journey.

The most important thing I learned is that a consistent effort does lead to success; I

made a difference to so many. I am continuing with the reading club and involving other

confident that the hard work that it took to reach this point will be worth it.

Featured school: Casuarinas International College, the first
four-programme school in Latin America
Casuarinas International College (CIC), Peru is the first
school in Latin America to offer all four IB programmes
Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme
(MYP), Diploma Programme (DP) and IB Career-related
Programme (CP, formerly IBCC)*. With a 20-year trajectory
in international education, the school seeks to form
ethical leaders with a humanistic vision, internationally
competitive entrepreneurs and citizens committed to the
social and cultural development of their community.
Casuarinas College campus
Luis Ernesto Gutirrez Lpez, CP Coordinator and Dr.
Graham Gisby, School Director, talk about the impact of
the CP within the school:

Q: What made your school decide to offer the CP?

We chose this qualification because it is an option that feeds directly into the professional
requirements that the current job market and that universities demand. It gives our
students the opportunity to explore, in depth, career options such as marketing,
international business, gastronomy and tourism. They also develop the personal and
professional competencies that underscore those careers. It gives us a pre-university offer
that is much more inclusive and appealing.

Q: What is your favourite aspect of the programme?

We particularly value the flexibility of this programme. It allows us to personalize the formative
preparation of each student on an individual basis. For example, if someone wishes to
specialize professionally in marketing, they not only take this course, but also the mainstream
components community and service, reflection, and approaches to teaching and learning
that allow for a much deeper understanding of the profession and its skills development.

Their community and service work gives students the space to apply their new marketing
knowledge to the benefit of the nearby shanty town market sellers in the project Accompanying
Entrepreneurs. During the project, they carry out a promotional campaign to sell nutritional
cookies that are specially prepared for both the battle against and prevention of infant malnutrition.
By means of the reflection component, we can evaluate the ethical implications of marketing,
raising questions concerning the importance of truth and objectivity amongst other key principles.

Approaches to teaching and learning encourages critical, creative and lateral thinking skills
that are valued for todays professions. Students set personal goals that in turn develop
through language development in both English and Spanish. By improving oratory and
persuasive skills, with the preparation of high impact presentations, students learn to share
more effectively with students of other nationalities.

This educational programme is designed so that its distinctive components interact,

developing the skills and practical intelligence precisely by means of professional action.

Q: How has the schools culture changed as a result of becoming an IB continuum school?
It is very pleasing to have become the first school in Latin America to implement all four IB
programmes, but at the same time we are challenged to continue our own process of reflection,
continually improving our educational offer. We have a healthy pride in our highly specialized
staff, many of whom are workshop leaders in the three original IB programmes, and now we
shallhave a whole new experience coming from our schools IBCC (now CP) Academy team.

Through our permanent process of collaborative reflection, we analyse the IB norms and
standards and our methodologies at the heart of our educational model, assessing the impact
of our education in both the corporate and the real worlds. Going from the transdisciplinary
approach of the PYP to the disciplinary focus of the DP, our students now find a new
challenge: the integration of the specializations demanded by the DP courses with the CPs
transdisciplinary skills and competencies through exploration set within a real work context.

Q: How will becoming a four-programme school affect your approach in collaborating

with other schools?
The knowhow acquired within the school is shared with other schools particularly by means of
international symposia and training workshops with other IB World Schools. Perhaps the most
rewarding aspect is the experience of reaching out to so many public schools now that the
Diploma Programme has gained such wide recognition throughout the country, particularly
in the establishment of Colegios de Alto Rendimiento, where we are honoured to serve.
Working closely with the Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas in Lima has also been a great help
for us. They give us a completely different perspective to a school course plus a great depth of
experience and professionalism.
