Name of Video:
SADIE teaching strategy
Length of Video:
1:40
What was video about?
This is a strategy that a teacher created for her math students, working on addition problems with
sums up to 10. You need a deck of cards, connecting blocks, and a game board with numbers 1-
10, as well as markers. The goal is to fully cover the game board with numerals that are used to
create their target number (the number they drew from the deck of cards).
Framework:
CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.3
Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using
objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and
5 = 4 + 1).
How I will teach lesson:
In order to meet the criteria for the Kindergarten core standards, I would incorporate this SADIE
teaching strategy to ensure that my students understood the operations and algebraic thinking for
numbers 1-10. This video did not specify the age range, but it fits right in to the framework I
chose. After teaching a small math lesson, I would then gather the students to play this game. I
would put them in groups depending on the class size, and then start the game. The students
would draw the card, and then use the connecting blocks to make the number on their game
board, if possible. The first group that filled their entire board would win. To incorporate more
learning, I would ensure that even if they did not have the numbers needed to reach the target
number on the card that they drew, that they still know how to add and decompose pairs of
numbers, in each way possible.
