Approaches: 1. The students will each receive a webquest sheet which has
1. Webquest the directions at the top. They will go through the websites
2. Safety Kit Exit on the paper and use the websites to help them answer the
Slip questions on hurricane safety. When the students finish their
webquest sheet they will turn it in for completion.
2. After the students have finished the webquest they will
create a picture of their own Safety Kit and will draw the
items in their kit and will turn this in as an exit slip which
the teacher will then assess if the students have understood
what safety precautions need to take place for a hurricane.

Assessment Scale:
Webquest: Completion check
Safety Kit:
0-1 supplies in their kit-Below Basic
2-3 supplies in their kit- Basic
4-5 supplies in their kit-Average
6+ supplies in their kit- Above Average

Subject Matter/Content:

The impact a hurricane can make
What the damage of a hurricane looks like
What causes a hurricane to make that impact

Key Vocabulary:
Safety: The condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury
Precautions: A measure taken in advance to prevent something dangerous from happening

What to do before during and after a hurricane
What should be in their safety kit
Who they should listen to during a hurricane for updates and for general
announcements
What are supplies they should stock up on during a hurricane
Where they should go during a hurricane

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
As the students walk into the classroom the teacher will have their life vest on like the end of
last lesson and will have a first aid kit spread out on a desk for the students to wonder and
look at.
The teacher should have the room look a mess and like a hurricane has just hit it
Have the desks moved and have the books everywhere in the classroom
The teacher will invite the students to the carpet to read the back section of the book Eye of
the Storm
The teacher will introduce the book and ask
What do you boys and girls think we are learning about today based off of what Im
wearing as well as what the book cover looks like?
Anticipated Answers: Learning about water safety, How to be safe!
The teacher will read the book and point out key points in the book such as, what to
do in case of a hurricane, and safety tips.
After the book the teacher will ask the students again
What do you think we are learning today?
The students will respond and the teacher will then prompt then as a transition saying
Lets go to our desks to find out! But first lets fix the mess from the hurricane!
Have the students help the teacher fix the room

Development/Teaching Approaches
After reading the book the students will return to their seats and will watch a video clip about
hurricane safety and safety tips.
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-i80ULTbgf4
The students will want to be writing down what they see in the video as it will help
them with their webquest and safety kit later.
Once the video is over the teacher will make a list of some of the safety tips that the
students saw in the video, to engage the students in safety.
The teacher will ask What are some tips that you learned from the video
The teacher will go over some of the tips that the students might not know such as,
move away from broken glass or fill up a bathtub with water and other tips that
students might not know or be familiar with.
The teacher will then hand out the webquest sheet and will explain the directions
The teacher will say Use the websites at the top of the page to answer the questions
below and will then go over the webquest sheet so that the students know what they
are looking for.
The teacher will give the students approximately 20 minutes to complete this webquest and
will then have the students turn in the webquest sheet for assessment by completion.

The students will then be told to think about a safety kit they would have in their home.
The students will be given a blank sheet of paper and will be told by the teacher draw
your own hurricane safety kit that you would find in your house, make sure you have
enough supplies to last you through the hurricane and even possibly after the
hurricane.
The students can be as creative as they would like, use crayons, markers, scissors,
glue, anything they need to create their safety kit. They will have 15 minutes to create
this.
The students will turn this in for an assessment based off of the scale.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
Before the students leave, the teacher will pull up a video of Hurricane Katrina and will
explain,
This hurricane happened around our area and made an impact on a lot of people, we
will find out more about this hurricane tomorrow
As the video is playing the teacher will say things such as, Wow look at those big
waves, Look at how strong the wind is, and other things to get the students
engaged in the video and interested to learn more about Hurricane Katrina

the whole group setting.

at the top to help the student sort their ideas.
